One of the, best authorities in Ore gon on the wool situation recently re turned from ait extended trip over the range country, and in the course of a conversation, said, among other things, that the small farmers of this country arc the ones to whom wc must look for our future mutton sup ply; that the. big ranges were beins cut up by the dry farmer, and that it would- be jl small farm proposition with a few up to a few. hundred sheep. His first thought, is to make his livestock at enough to go on the market in the shortest possible time ana tne aay it is ngnt ne snips it iu the 6tockyards and turns his mind to the finishing of another bunch of live sttock. He also knows that he must have purebreds in order to secure the earliest maturjty. He f'ghts shy of the scrub and considers a long price paid for a well-known sire a splendid .in vestment He is the man whose build ings are well painted, whose machin ery Is under cover, and whose land is well fenced, and down in the village bank you will find that he has a very satisfactory balance. He is a manl so who isn't afraid to be considered somewhat of a book farmer, and all of the latest bulletins in the agricul tural college will be found coming to his mail box. He is pretty apt to be . an influential member of the Grange, and his farm is rather in the, nature of an experiment-' station to the entire county; He himself is a keen business man; kn v.'s that he is honest and is willing to allow that business men of the city who handles his products are likewise honest; above all, he does not sit up nights belaboring, big business, but rather nses his best efforts in cooperation. We are doing all we can to eliminate the scrub, let's eliminate the "in and outer," a menace to successful live stock industry. Live Stock Journal. TEACHERS' HOMES. Something that is attracting a good deal of attention is a new system of homes for rural teachers, doing away with the old-fashioned way of board ing around, the bane of the average teacher. This has been done success fully in Texas, a former resident of that state informs the Democrat. It is now being considered in this state, with prospects of the experiment be ing tried extensively. A few have been built already, with good results; but the idea is yet in its infancy here. Benton county is making arrange ments to have a few. Oregon has al ways taken an advanced stand on im nrovemcnts connected with education, and no doubt will be equal to the oc casion in the matter of rural homes for teachers.
