E. HOFER RESIGNS. Says College Boards Should Be Com. bined. Colleges Costing Too Much. In handing in his resignation as a member of the board of regents oi Monmouth Normal, E. Hofer, gener ally called Co., makes the following interesting statement: . I cannot consistently serve longer on any such board, as I believe all the institutions of higher education should be under one board of three persons and that the people of this state arc being taxed too much for higher ed ucation. ' , For the present biennial period the appropriations for this purpose arc $1,991.5SZ40, and the ten other de partments of state government cost noly $1756.478.87. ,Under separate boards the three institutions of high er education cost $235,103.63 more titan all the other institutional expens es of state government.- I believe under one board of three persons applying business principles and not dominated by local interests of the institutions themselves, dupli cations could be avoided and the ex pense io the higher education reduc ed about one-half. Such a measure has always been opposed by the insti tutions themselves and no reform is possible 'udder the present system. Neutrals Sunk. Washington. May 31. Official fig ures published by the British em bassy show that up to the end of Ap ril neutral nations had lost 121 ships sunk by submarines. Miller Here M. A. Miller, collector of internal revenue was in the city yesterday, wliilc here attcrding the meeting of the Democratic central committee. Death of Prof. Crawford Prof. Thos. Crawford died at Port land this week. He was a former in structor in the O. A. C, during the days of President Gatch. He had been an invalid for nine years with paraly sis. He was a son of Dr. Crawford, i Brownsville pioneer. Left for the East A. C. Schmitt and son Lawrence left last night for the east, with tick ets for Chicago, and other places in view. At Portland they were joined by Mr. Schmitt's four brothers, profes sional men there and the party then started eastward. They will be gone several weeks, while east having a family reunion. Cohen's Cigar. Store- Leo Cohen this mornino' opened his new place of business on Lyon street, near Third, where he will deal in ci gars and soft drinks and run a bil liard and pool hall. It is a neat place and under Mr. Cohen will undoubted ly be a popular place. Wat son and may be depended upon for prompt and reliable service. Final Account Filed The final account in the estate of Geo. D. Smith was filed today. Appointed Administrator Daniel Stricklcr has been appoin ted administrator of the estate of Jo seph Stricklcr. Marriage License George Mike Zclinski, 31, a farmer living near Salem, and Anna F.liia- beth Pepperling, of Scio, 18, were is sued a marriage license this morn ing. Thcv were married at Jordan this evening. Returned from San Francisco- William Ritchie, of Corvallis, was in the city today. Now little Jane Lec, one of Fox'6 tots, hates monkeys. But she hates villains more. Holmes makes such a capital villain that little Jane cannot prevent her hatred from showing, just as the children (and some grownups) cannot help hissing the bad man in the melodrama. It chances that little Jane in "A Wife's Sacrifice" has to show her ha tred for Pcppo (Mr. Holmes in the flesh). She does it by kicking at him and sticking out her tongue, which is the worst insult the little girls know'. One even notes in the picture that there is real hatred in it. And there is.
