Bstahtnhedl in 1865. MONDAY, HAY 15. 1916. UNDER TARIFF. . Here is an eastern view of th tariff situation, one worth studying: Senator Warren G. Harding, a standpat delegate to the "regular" Republican national convention, has - been appointed to sound the "key note" in that body, and in advance, Mr. Harding has' notified the pub lic that the tariff is cast for the para mount issue' of the Republican cam paign, as he designs to pitch it Whe ther the party is willing to accept the paramount issue as pronounced by the Ohio senator is problematical It is plain, unmistakable Aldrichism and lit is meet that it should come from a Republican successor of Mark Han nah in the United State senate. We all know what a protective tariff is as purveyed by the Republican party. We know how it is constructed. We know that it is the handiwork of spe cial interests who write into the dif ferent schedules what taxes should be levied on the masses to swell the profits of the classes. That is what a protective tariff is and all it is. We were warned by statesmen of the school of Mr. Harding that the Underwood tariff would bring uni versal bankruptcy. We were- admon ished that it would close all our fac tories, vacate all our mines, devas tate all our farms, put into a state of liquidation all our banks, throw out of employment all our labor. These were false prophets. The in dustries of the country all sorts of legitimate business were never so prosperous as now. The best' barom eter of business is the bank clearings and they were never before so enor mous as we see them under this wick ed Democratic tariff. The figures are startling in their immensity. In the national banks alone there were, March 7, deposits to the stupendous amount of $10790,000,000, an increase of $2,198,000,000, or nearly 25 per cent in a space of three months! Just think of that under this miserable Demo cratic tariff! That does not include the, deposits in the state institutions, banks and trust companies, which1 share in this unprecedented prosper-1 tty which has come upon the coun try that was so unpatriotic as to re peal the Aldrichism that flourished, during the entire sirteen years of Hannahism that intervened between the first inauguration of McKinley till the first inauguration of Wilson. Such statesmen as . "Uncle Joe" Cannon and Dr. Gallinger were dole ful in the warnings that the Under wood tariff would force us to buy everything and not allow us to sell anything. It is written: "Beware of the false prophets that come to you in sheep's clothing." Instead of de stroying our export trade we have sold abroad, the past twelve months, goods and merchandise that exceed more than a bill! n dollars 'our sales abroad during any years 'Al drichism was in the saddle. Nor is that all. For fifty years the G. O. P. has been boasting that its policies alone made a "favorable" balance of trade. Wrong again as usual At present the "favorable" . balance of trade is greater, by more than two fold than it ever was under a Repub lican regime. GREAT WORDS. How can Americans differ about the safety of America? I, for my part, am ambitious that America should do a greater and more diffi cult thing than the great nations on the other side of the water have done. In all the belligerent countries men . without distinction of party have drawn together to accomplish a suc cessful prosecution of the war. Is it not a more difficult and a more de- , sirable thing that all Americans should put partisan prepossessions aside and draw together for the suc cessful prosecution of peace? I cov et that distinction for America; and I believe that America is going to en joj that distinction. Woodrow Wil son, . Misnrs Docs any Albany girl think she inn throw a baseball 227 feet 3 inches. She can get her picture in the papers if she can, for that is the world's record now for girls. Gladys Fainter :d '.his at the University of Wiscon sin. Albany has plenty of boys who can beat it and then some. It is always quite a debatable ques tion how far women shall go in ath letics. There is no reason why a certain amount of athletics' is not a good thing; but there is a limit, and women unquestionably are not built for exercise as men are. But the - right kind of exercise is good medicine for both men and wo men.' , . Charlie Chaplain's fame continues. He has been sued for $500,000 by the Essanay Co. Even the frost hit us more gently than it did other sections. - If Carranza doesn't behave self he will lose his job. him- What fools some women are. Will Orpet the Waukegan murderer, has received scores of love letters. Cummins and Burton have now come and gone, and both will be gon ers. I. B. Green is a correspondent in the Dallas Observer. The man with sense never calls a barber names while in his chair. A .man back east did that and is now an earthly submarine. The Washingtton County News Times enthusiastically endorses A. E. Scott for the legislature. Sure, enough, Scott is one of the editors. Coming up from a printer's devil he deserves the boost in to the legisla ture if he ia willing to stand the op probrium. Some of Ui Loved. "God must love the plain people or He would not have made so many of them." Abraham Lincoln. Running for Office. Clyde Rodkey, who is becoming fa mous 'as an after-dinner sneaker.
