BEING ABOVE PARTIZANSHIP. ' It is always refreshing in this age of partisanship when a man is run across who administers his office with out regard to party, appreciating the fact that he is as much a servant of one party as the other, just of the peo ple, and who rises above his party and deals fairly with all of his fellow men. Such a man has been Ben Olcott, sec retary of state. The people hardly ; know whether he is a Democrat or a Republican so non-partizan has he been in his work as secretary of state. The result is that just now strong par tizans are up in arms against him and are doing their best to defeat him. It is to be regretted that there are not more men liwe Olcott in public office. . He has been fair and conscientious and is a man of strict integrity, but he is not a rabid partizan. a '-' 0 . ' "- IGNORANT AUTOISTS In regard to the widespread mechan ical ignorance among autoists a writer in Farm and Fireside says: . "The number of persons who have no practical knowledge of mechanics and yet run their own automobiles is - so amazing that I have often been ask- i ' ed; 'How do they do it? How can a young girl who doesn't know a crank shaft from a carburetor run an auto . with such grace and skill? How can a professional man wjth his head stuffed with medicine or law have the nerve to venture miles away - from a repair . Shop? "A small-town merchant who has run a large touring car for three years admitted to me the other day that he didn't know the principle of a gas en gine except that it responded to his control. 'He said that some' day he hoped to study it all out, although he didn't see how that wonld help him to get any more service ou of his car. This case is not exceptional, hut simp ly help to show that automobiles are very nearly 'fool-proof.' " ' ,' .FOR DELEGATE. Editor Democrat: While asking ' the Democrats of the First District to give me their suppor as delegate to the National Democratic convention. 1 deem it bnt fair to give them a brief statement concerning myself and what I stand for. i I am just a plain farmer 63 years of age. Was born in Indiana but have spent 62 years of my life in the Wil- ' lamette valley, all on a farm, except two years when the people of Linn county honored me with the office of . sheriff, which I tried to fill honestly and right How I succeeded I am willing to leave to the judgment of the ones I tried to serve. Am a life-long Democrat and a firm believer in the principles of true Democracy. Always willing to abide by the choice of the people and will so act in this case. I heartily endorse the policies of our great president. Woodrow Wilson, who will be our standard bearer. I am in favor of efficient prepared ness for defense, believing that our safety from attack depends largely on - being prepared to resist a foreign force. I cannot understand how any. one. on the Pacific Coast can consist ently oppose strengthening our de. fensc, exposed a we are along a long roast line. The Pacific Coast is too ' dear to me to think of it being used as a battle ground in the future when it is in our power to so fortify it that ... we will be almost immune from at tack. ., , , . . I have sons ,and grandsons and am decidedly op posed to war, but should it be forced on us I want mjr sons as well as oth er's sons to have an equal chance should we be called on to repel an in vasion.
