AW TWO ALBANY DAILY DKM6CRAT, THURSDAY, APRIL 13, 1910. Daily Democrat If. P. NUTTING Lessee. Entered at the pastoffice at Albany, Oregon, as second-class matter. THURSDAY, APRIL 13, 1916 ROOSEVELT'S AMBITION. The Salem Journal has hit the i Roosevelt measure in the right spot: Colonel Roosevelt has read the riot act to the Republican party and told its leaders exactly where to get off. He is willing to make the race against Wilson, but notifies the party in ad . vance that he is going to be the boss if elected, and that it must do as he wants it to or he will make it do it. He is not going to "pussyfoot," what ever that is, but is going to make the world sit up and take notice that Te-i-dy is IT, He seems to think the par ty cannot get along without him and for that reason sets himself up as a -dictator. It will be a strange thing indeed if the great Republican party with seven million voters cannot find in its ranks any man but Roosevelt to lead it. It will be a strange thing indeed if that great party selects as its standard bearer a man who after it had elected him to the highest of fice in the world, deliberately betray ed it for his own selfish purposes and to gratify the most over-weening ego tism ever shown by any man in mod ern days. GOVERNMENT OWNERSHIP. Portland Journal:" In the United States 60 cents is paid for the same telephone talk that only 8 cents is paid for in Sweden. In the United States, the average cost of a 300-mile conversation by phone is $1.80; in Sweeden, 13 cents. For a 700-mile talk in America the av erage toll is $4, and in Sweden 34 cents. The figures are from a govern ment report . It is the greed of corporations that forces public ownership. Here is Chas. M. Schwab before congress, begging that body not to pass the government armorplate bill. He offers to manu facture armor for an indefinite period at any price which the federal trade commission shall decide to be fair." For 29 years -the Carnegie, Midvale and Bethlehem Steel companies have had an armorplate monopoly,' and their prices to the government have been extortionate. They were prices that within a comparatively few years, took the plate makers out of poverty and obscurity and made them the - richest among the very rich men of the world. They sold armor to foreign governments at lower prices than to their own government, and have pub licly admitted it The fruit of their greed will prob ably by the future manufacturer of ar morplate by the government They drove the government into public own ership. ' Can the magnates in all lines not see what they are doing? are almost in convulsions. MISFITS Dr. Bell, of Boston, of telephone fame, doesn't need an alarm to get up mornings, for he doesn't go to bed un til 3 a. m. . .'. . He says that's the time to think well Therefore, he says there's nothing in the old rule of early to bed, early to rise, makes a man, etc. Here's where great minds run in dif ferent channels. The best time to think is after a good night's rest, early in the morn ing, when alone, braced up by the morning zephyrs, free from the mi crobes stirred up by the day time traffic. Another awful calamity to the U. S. is the fact that a certain cigarette pa per, made in Austria, can no longer be secured here. Fiends to taste, down at Roscburg, according to the Review, YES, IT WILL MAKE YOU THINK. IT WILL EVEN MAKE YOU TALK.
