For a good many years the United States has been spending several mil lion dollars a year on preparedness Some of it may have been wasted; but it has been spent just the same. Whe ther there is much or little to show for it, it evinces the fact that our country has always been in favor of a reasonable amount of permanent preparation, in which it has been backed by the masses. ."' The most conservative have no: ob jected. Men, though, differ as to the limit A ridiculous thing about it is for any one to assume that the one wanting to spend the most loves his country the most. The man who real ly loves his country will not wish to jeopardize it in a financial way any more than in a warlike way. BIG REWARD SUGGESTED. Someone suggests that if a reward of $100,000 had been Offered for Villa, dead or alive, it would have settled the matter a good deal quicker than by sending an army after him over an unhealthy country, fraught with dan ger. This suggests the employment of treachery on the part of his follow ers, for his enemies have undoubtedly been doing their level best to get the bandit. It would have been the cheap- "f wrav In Inn ir nut" Kiif fl,ri i Do certainty oT its effectiveness. DEEPEST LOYALTY. Tiie mass of American people are loyal to our government to the limit, including our naturalized citizens. They always have and always will dif fer about methods, but when it comes to a question of patriotism it is un limited, and in no country in the world is it more intense. 1 TAKES ALL OF THEM. Recently in agricultural districts in Austria, one as big as one of our counties, thickly populated, it was found that there was not a single man left in the district All had gone to war, old and young, offering up their lives, if need be, for their country, right or wrong. It presents a sample of what war does, the. devil's instru ment for devastation of the world. MAKING MISTAKES. Recently an Astoria paper stated that a prominent young man had se cured a decree of divorce. It caused astonishment and concern. Instead of the young man securing a dvorce for himself, ar court reporter he had been made a referee in a divorce case in connection with a decree of divorce. It simply shows how easy it is to maloe mistakes in a newspaper office, and all papers make them more or less, universally unintentional. Mem bers of a family have to bear and for bear over the daily mistakes, else there would be constant trouble. In a fash ion we are all members of a big fam ily, with cats and dogs around. OFFICE ROOMS For rent in the Will-Stark building. See F. G. Will, Jeweler. a4-6 FOR TRADE 170 or 350 acres ad joining in Lincoln county. Six mil lion feet timber. Bell phone 345-R Home 2227 MISFITS We stive it up, whether it is pro nounced Ver-dun or Ver-doon. It won't make much difference if the Germans get much nearer. Wc also give up; Why gasoline i so high. . One man says it is because the U, S,. is building a railroad in Alaska. The real reason is simply "because." You ought to see us lick the Amer icans in the front office of he Drm. every evening just before the paper is out. The Democrat has received a circu 'iir headed in great big black letters: ' Is this the time to start a govern ment arnv.r plan:?" Well. n: from -Millionaire Schvab's viewpoin. It would be aiu! to close up hU iiiji fac tory, av.d make Bethlehem i -ck (um- L'nMi ;-sm has been rohb:1 ty the teel trusts until it is about t'.-r.c lor I.im U' do a little, work hininclt. An exchange says that Villa will be captured only by luck or treachery. Bet he is captured by pluck. It is humorous to read the close ness of his capture as narrated by the yellows. Speaking of danger. Mrs. Pank hurst, the celebrated suffragette, is to be in Oregon in May. Sometimes there is small recom pense here for the big state taxes we pay; but it is about as scarce as hen's teeth. An Albany man getting a U. O. con tract is hallalujagalorious news. When a vessel of one of those com mon little countries in Europe is sub iiarined nothing is heard from it from the countries affected. If one of them w.-.s an American there would be a howl from the jingoists, and perhaps :l?e rest of us, for fight at once. Why Worry. Chico Enterprise: Naomi sat on the stone coping, her pink topped hat adding a new touch of color to the ;cntle painting of the evening. Ruth, her sister, in a brilliant blue waist, sat under a tree nearby. Several women members of the church appeared lat er. They laughed and chatted and did not appear worried.
