These be sad days for Republican politicians in search of a campaign is sue. Deprived of the full dinner pail, foreign relations and preparedness a things to shout about by the attitude and achievements of the Democratic administration, there was only protec tion left for a slogan. And now that's gone. The National Association of Manufacturers, by it president, Col. George Pope, has put its seal of ap proval on President Wilson" recom mendation for a tariff commission tc ' take the tariff out of politics. "For years," CoL Pope says, "the National Association of Manufacturers has been endeavoring to have a tariff commis sion rppointed so thr-.t the subject of tariff making might be put on something like a scientific basis." And. he continues, the president's accept ance of the principle "will be receiv ed with satisfaction by the country at large and is particularly gratifying to the National Association of Manufac turers, which, by formal resolutions and through the inuividual efforts of it's membership, embracing all shades of political opinion, has urged that the tariff be taken out of politics." If Col. Pope voices the 'real senti ments of his organization, -and there is no reason to believe that he does not, an important source of Republi nan campaign revenue has been cut off, as wcli as a Republican issue lost American manufacturers have been "held up" for years for contribution; to the G. O. P. campaign chest. If their expressed desire for a non-partisan, scientific tariff commission is , sincere, they will have no further use for Republican promises of such a commission that never are fulfilled They will be getting what they pro fess to be desirous of by the recom mendation of a Democratic president and the vote of a Democratic con gress, and they will be in a position to tell the G. O. P. fat fryers to go chase themselves. ' THE OVEREATER. Insurance statistics show that the man who overeats, as well as the man who indulges in alcoholic drinks is a bad risk, according to Arthur Hunter, a life insurance actuary of New York. Mr. Hunter delivered a warning againSt over-indulgence in an address to a Young Men's Christian Association. He said that the heavy diner as well as the heavy drinker was sure of a short life, but seldom a merry one, because the conditions un der which he lived precluded the full enjoyment of either mental or physi cal well being. But at the top of the list of life-shortening habits he placed the use of alcoholic liquors. ' "Seventy years ago," said Mr. Hun ter, "an abstainer was unknown. When the first abstainer applied to a London company for insurance a special meet ing of the board of directors was call ed to deal with this prenomenon and a special premium was demanded. Contrary to all expectations, this man lived to be 82 years old." ANDREW CARNEGIE IN NEED. In the March Woman's Home Com - panion it is announced that Mr. Car negie is in dire need, as a result of liia practice of giving to charity. He has given away $350,000,000, and has only $20,000,000 left "Everybody talks about Mr. Car negie's conditions, but nobody moves. That is, practically nobody. A man named Marquis announced that he would receive contributions for Mr. Carnegie. A small boy busted open his Christmas bank with the famHy hamr mer and sent in two coppers. Where upon the wily Marquis, who evidently . is a potential millionaire himself, call ed attention to the fact that he never promised to 'forward contributions to Mr. Carnegie simply to receive them' and decamped with the two cents." Some people would drop dead with exhaustion if they were on time. A clock that was always half an hour late would be sent to the bone yard. . O. T. is a good thing to keep in one's program.
