The Tacoma News has something extra on the subject of newspapers After all the newspaper is a very human institution. If it is a real news paper, it is very, very human for it is as often said, a true mirror of human conduct. If the newspaper at times seems to be reflecting the evil, rather tnan the good side of men, its human traits are the more olainlv revr.ilpH For is not that one of the most pro tuberant of human characteristics? 'Most congregations of women -ami men will be found discussing their neighbors faults, rather than their virtues; and the maioritv sm tn hr s at the tape fully conditioned and tog- ged, to run down about any person praised by a newspaper or by an in ; dividual. Isn't it the truth? " If the 'newspaper may seem to be mirroring more of the unlikable than the likable side of humanity, it is be cause it is the unusual side. We as sume it to be a plain duty of a man to support and protect his wife and children a duty to which no bouquets are thrown because it is simnlr rfutv If he mistreats his family, that is a violation of duty, an unusual episode in contravention of the usual rule and it is this unusual thing that makes news. It also points a moral. -By the contrasts the true way is pointed out . , ; But the real newspaper does' not by any means concern itself wholly with the seamy side of life. The good that men do finds its Dlace in the nrlnit .The 'world's forward movements arc given abundant space. The bright side of human conduct is pictured. The upward trend is emnhasizrri humor and optimism abound. The honorable newspaper's chief mission is to establish a sound public opinion. The newspaper is created for thous ands of readers. Some of them like baseball; some like marine news; 6ome like editorials; sorSe like Eu- k-opean news; some like society news; . some like and read everything ' in a newspaper, and read it from cover to cover., If a reader is not fond of -sprots he should not condemn the. newspaper for printing sporting news, fcecause that is a one-sided selfish view. Why not condemn a grocery store for offering kippered salmon for sale when one does nofc like kip pered salmon? - ' It is true that a defense cannot be made for all newspapers. Some are viciously yellow; some attempt to live by faking ignoring the simple truth, and seeking, the notoriety which "snappy" stories born in irrespon sible reporters' heads will afford them. An intelligent public, however, soon learns which newspaper is endeavor ing to tell the eruth. There is infinite good in the con servative newspaper and by that term "conservative" is meant not political reaction nor capitalistic tendencies, but merely' a desire to print facts in a pleasing, but not flamboyant or flip pant manner. News is not news if it is untrue. WANTED To rent furnished house of 4 or S rooms. No children. Od dress D. P. T., Bix 454.
