Established in 1865. FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 4, 1916. SAYS FORD SUCCEEDED. Eugene Register: Miss Grace De Graff, of Portland, one of the mem. ; bers of the Henry Ford peace party. is a sister of Mrs. Ella Guilliford who resides at 1588 Patterson street in Eugene. Miss DcGraff was expect cd back to Portland yesterday. She left the Ford Peace ship, visited in Brockton, Mass., and expected to be home in Portland for the opening of the new school term. - According to a statement made by - Miss DcGraff during her stay in Brocktotn, Hemy Ford succeeded in his purpose. On the same authority it is declared that the reports given out regarding the trip were wrong. The correspondents on board the ship ; were severely scored by Miss DeGraff in addresses made before the teach ers of Brockton last Tuesday. Of the reports sent out and their authors Miss DeGraff is quoted a saying: "The public has been greatly misinformed by garbled .and twisted reports of the doings on board the ship. Few accurate reports were : made of the conferences and it is not surprising when a great Jnany news paper correspondents were carousing all night and were not in a condition to see or hear anything tight. "It is a mystery to me why editors sent men to cover such a trip who, I do not believe, could report accurate ly, the activities in their own home town." Of the alleged quarreling among the peace people. Miss DeGraff de clared that there was no dissension among the real peace delegates, but that the trouble was caused by a num ber who from the first had intended not to enter into the effort designed by Mr. Ford, but who were just going along to get a free trip. Henry Ford's claim to success, ac cording to Miss DeGrafPs statement, lies in the fact that through his ef forts, six delegates have been placed in The Hague, where they will fight for peace on neutral grounds. , ADULTERATIONS. "There arc three kinds of adulter ation," says an exchange. "First, the mixture of food with cheaper but not injurious articles; second, the use of substances that injure food qualities, to improve the color and appearance; third, the removal of valuable or nec essary ingredients. "The purity of baking powder, ketchup, . vinegar, flour, , and canned goods is difficult for anyone but a trained chemist to determine. The safest way to buy such articles is to get standard brands. "While spices arc generally adul terated with starchy substances, and the starch can be detected by adding a drop or two of tincture of iodine to a water solution of them, it is best to ...... ... 1 1 t A- 1t . . uuj sidnudiu uianiis. xjic siarcn test can be used with cloves, mustard, and cayenne. ."To detect coloring matter in tea put a teaspoonful of tea in a sieve. shake over a piece of white unglazed paper, crushing a little if tightly rolled. Then crush the sifted dust on the paper with a spatula or a case knife, drawing it along on the paper. "If colored, streaks of various col ors will be mingled with the uniform color of the dea dust. : "Coffee is adulterated by adding chicory, various cereals, (peas, and beans. In coarsely .ground samples tue cottce will have. ?. dull surface, while chicory is darker and giimmy looking, and the beans and peas have a polished surface. A magnifying glass will make these differences plainer. For further test put a level teaspoon ful in a small bottle of water, shake, let stand a moment; most of the cof fee particles, being oily, will float; unless very fine, the substitutes will simc to the oottom." . If you want your wood sawed, call Albany Stables, 34 Both phones. Brown & Simms. J27F10 MISFITS An X says that N. G. stands for Neutral Ground. The Medtord Sun has discovered that in four speeches President Wil son made this statement: "We are in the midst of a world that we 'did not make and cannot alter." Well, what's the matter of that It's worth repeating some more. If the government has any prob lems it should send them to Minne apolis. A fellow there lias figured out that there is just H.lX'O.OOO pounds of snow on the ground in that city. That old saying of years ago, that if you could buy some men for what they are worth and sell them for what they think they aie worth you could make a fortune, continues to hold food in the world. Back in the middle east, covered with snow, -they have begun their au to campaign, on high gear. The time to strike is early in the game. Geel But it is hard to tell what a day will bring forth. Ball will roll for assessor of Lincoln county. Bert Geer is willing to he sheriff some more of Lincoln county. A high ?eer fellow, ready to start at once he deserves to be kept going. 'An exchange wants to know in what part of Oregon Portland is anyway. It is charged with trying to absorb ill the rose glory of the state, always referring to the Portland rose in stead of to the Oregon rose. Just as fine roses in Albany as in Port. One of the humorosities of the newspaper business is having people expect a two or three line item to have the most important position in the paper. It can't be done. There isn't any in the Democrat.
