During the season of snow here a great deal of interest has been taken in the feeding of birds. Few people realize what a friend birds are in their destruction of pests, Prof. Sykes of O. A. C, the zoologist of the college. Says that feeding the birds is only , squaring our accounts with them. The following will do much to make one appreciate the value of birds to the country: "The few handfuls of grain thrown out for the birds during the recent snow storm will bring the best re turns of the year. Many a little bird- guardian, 'robin, blue-bird, siskin, gold finch of Junco, who came months ago to clean up the weed seeds of last season or to catch the cutworm and . leather Jackets lurking in the turnip or grass fields, was going about hun gry and with cold feet Many of them also have perished with the cold. "An examination of the stomach contents of birds during an open win ter shows them to be at such a time beneficial. In one robin's stomach 'were found 210 March fly larvae, and a China Pheasant had eaten 673 larvae at a single meal. These grubs re semble cutworms and are a serious pest on root crops, grass ard alfalfa. Moreover, five Juncos were found to have destroyed in a single morning yrc r j i i n i .:,j 1.1 -i iiittjr nccu ocvu. tui iu seeds, and 301 pigweed seeds. Thus the Juncos, together with the siskin's and green-backed finches, make away with millions of noxious weed seeds in the course of an ordinary winter season. 4. With the snow deep on the ground the birds - were having a hard time. They have no deep seated hostility towaids us even though we have chided some of them for helping themselves to cherries or wheat dur ing the summer. So they may be en. couraged to take food put out on the ' window ledges." In his bird-feeding Professor Sykes has found that the covers of baking powder boxes, lard pails, etc., make admirable food trays for puttin out bird food. Small grain, clacked corn, wheat or barley, even rolled cereaels, put out in such receptacles or in wooden troughs, may be placed on the windo wledge, the roof or porch of out buildings or on tops of fence posts. Crumbs from ' the table, too, were appreciated by the birds, but these may also attract eats. OUR WIVES. "Wife means weaver. In the prim itive home, one of the principal em ployments was the making of cloth ing. The wool was spun into the threads by the girls, who were there fore called spinsters; the thread was woven into cloth by their mother who 'accordingly was called weaver, or wife. "It is the duty of the wife to culti vate the ability of making home hap py; keeping her house bright and at tractive; and at the same time being equal in position and influence with her husband. (Gnd did not take her out of the head of man to be over him, nor from the feet to be under him, but out of his side to be equal with him; from under his arm to be sheltered and protected by him; and from near his heart to be loved and live in sympathy and hclfulness by his side.' The wife and husband are in a true sense one. Whatever is good for her is good for him. She owes no duty to him that he does not owe to her. The love and honor the wife re quires of her husband that let her give to him. It is an even thing." Selected. 0 MOVIE ADVENTURE. When Carmen was presentcd-at this city last week, Albany people saw the record deep leap of the movies, one of the most startling things ever pre sented by movies, yet over so quick that few could hardly understand what they had seen. It was the real thing and showed what men are will ing to do for money and reputation lor daring. Ma,ny magazines have told about it. Mere is a neat description from Farm and Fireside: "Mounted on a horse, Arthur Davis, a motion-picture actor, rode off a precipice S3 feet high into a chasm in the Adirondack. The wild leap ter minated in a pool of water, vhich was doited by sharp, ugly crags of rocks. Catapulted from the great height both horse and rider struck the water at the same time. In the perpendicular descent rider and horse turned two somersaults. One of the five camera men assigned to take pictures of the unusual and daring scenes fainted as rider and horse fell. Davis was fished out of the pool, the bottom of which he and the horse had touched, and was rushed in a special Pullman car to a New York City hospital. It was found he had received a broken leg and many braises. The horse was un injured and swam ashore." MISFITS Feb. 3 is to be thrift day all over the U. S.
