For about eigliteen months it lias been war steadily, until we are all sat urated with it. Those engaged in the carnival of disaster arc about exhaust ed, their countries eithcir laid waste lor milked dry financially. The loss of human lives is estimated t ten mil lions. But the damage Ms far more than that, human hatred down deep in the hearts of. men, unrest established all oyer the world, greed rampant for gain and politicians seeking prefer ment through militarism. The war is itself about where it started, both 'sides claiming advantages, at least the end a matter of uncertainty from a neutral standpoint. ' Our own country has felt the in fluence in a marked way. Some have taken advantage of the matter for fi nancial gain and millions have been made. They and others are looking for future advantages and are seek ing to place our country on a basis of militarism, with a chip on our shoulders, call it by whatever name you choose, that's all it is. As a speaker said here this week the pro gram of the country, if carried out will simply, engender strife in the fu ture, calling for militarism every where, with nations going about with revolvers in their belts each striving to have the most ready to shoot at the shortest notice, with battlements ga lore. Analyze it honestly and see what ' it spells, in the end trouble and tur moil. ... y Of all fool things in the world the most so is the claim that carrying a revolver will work for peace. Many battleships ' and big guns are the same. ' " ; . It may be a sign of conditions when five men can enter a bank in a busy section of a city like Chicago and get away with $15,000 in cash. Happen ing in Chicago people have been made to realize what desperate men can ac complish with firearms. More snow this week reminds us how little we desire it in this country where conditions are all against snow. lOur homes are not built for it and ordinarily we do not dress for it. In 'short snow is always unwelcome here from a personal standpoint Other ' wise it may be a good thing and prob ably is, enriching the soil and pro tecting the crops. The ideal along any line is a big thing, close to perfection, something not difficult to describe; but hard to attain to. Like eugenic marriages they often fail to pan out in the last analysis, and we certainly all have our faults and lots of them.
