We almost stand on our head--sometimes in connection with the nar rations of the war over the Atlantic. It is a mixed affair, evolving a ball oi immense dimensions, that is rollin;; . down a great country, like a jugger naught crushing financially, morally and physically the people of Europe. Like a gormand the supreme nation of that continent are dominating the . smaller ones and gradually bringi"-j them into subjection. It seems almost impossible for them to keep out, and almost before they realize it they a:e involved in the maelstrom. The pas week has seen little change in condi tions, perhaps a gradual tightening ci the hold of the central powers on th: Balkan country. The difficulties of the United State. have gradually come out of tt.e clouds, and just now seem not to L: of a serious character, and, one can hardly see how the country can be in volved, at least so long as cool heads control affairs. With a man like Wi'. son at the he.-.d of the government ( there should never be trouble between this country and any of the European belligerents. Nevertheless one can nev er tell what a day- will bring fortli. Often a bomb explodes before one i" . aware of its presence and the air be comes filled with fumes. Taking the proper course President Wilson insisted on the punishment of the Mexican murderers being left to Pres ident Carranza's government, and the result is the summary punishment o! f a good many of the bandits, prompt justice that will have a decided effect i for good. California, the land of sunshine oranges, flowers and everything else delightful, has been having a storrr. such as we know nothing about in the Willamette Valley.
