Dun continues to make reports of a character to indicate a stability to the financial conditions of the country- which are of a very encouraging char acter, coming from a source to be re lied upon. . Preparations for the further exten sion of ' American enterprise are un dertaken with increased vigor at the end of the holiday season. Domestic finances are in an unusually sound po sition and funds continue superabun dant for all legitimate' requirements. while (here is no lack of the confidence essentiail to the launching and promo tion of important projects. In the latter respect, present conditions at ford a striking contrast to those ex isting twelve months ago and, more over, all of the statistical baromete-.' emnhasize the changed situation pre vailing at the opening of 1916. Unlike the beginning of 1915, the new yea star'.s with a record production anil i-istrihtition at high prices in Tram lines and an accumulation of forward co'itrncts t.at ensures a continuance cl the exceptirp&l activity in about all hr.-nches of business. With compara lively few exceptions, annual settle ments have been effected without ser- ious strain and in a number of in stances results of inventorying sur o'ass' even the most sanguine expecta tions. Traveling salesmen are return ing to the road and reports from v ery section of the country tell' of bright prospects in the commercial world. Seasonable shutdowns at man ufacturing plants were very short be cause of the urgent, demands; yet while holiday interruptions were les- of a factor than usual, it is neverthe less remarkable that pig iron outpu exceeded all previous monthly total during December There were fully twice as many furnaces in blast in : Tanuarv as on the same date of l?l.- and pressure of work is so great in -h;s quarter that extensive additin to productive - capacity are ' bein? made, or are contemplated. - Sonu fresh labor troubles have developed in the basic industry, but, on . th-: whole, tsrikes are not seriously dis turbing and the new year has Drousm wage increases at many points. This obviously enhances, the purchasing , power of the masses and it is signifi cant in this' ' connection that the amount oi money in uutuiauvu in creased $50,000,000 last month to a new high record. In spite of the hea vy production, supplies of copper are steadily diminishing and the metal has risen close to the maximum price level of 1907; generally the trend of the leading commodities continue up vard"and of the 325 wholesale quota tions refularly compiled by Dun's Review 69 showed advances and 16 declines this week. ' Though not in itself of special sig nificance, the rise in call loans to 3 per cent, this week marked a new feature in a situation that has been singularly devoid of interesting de velopments. SUCCESSFUL WORKERS. In the February American Maga zine Ray Stannard Baker gives the following code for successful work, including the nine business com mandments adapted for boys and girls: , . ' - "1. I will respect all useful work, and be courteous to the workers. "2. I will know my work, and have ambition to do it Well. "3. I will take the initiative, ar.d develop executive ability. "4. I will be industrious and will ing. "5. I will be honest and truthful. "6. I will educate myself into The Albany Bakery We Deliver to Any Part of the ,. city 115-119 E. 3rd Street Bell 560 Party R Home 419 H. FIRCHAU CO. itrcngth of character. "7. I will be faithful to my work. "8? I will be loyal. . "9. I will be a gentleman a lady. "The world does not owe me a liv ing, hut I am proud to make a nood living for myself." MISFITS A Newbera editor adit-its that he never saw Misfits. Think of the vacu um in that editor's life. A few more corpses hung up on the trees of Mexico and Villa and his men may decide to be good. Villa's should be the next one. Even state fair boards have to have their wars. It is in the atmosphere. The war is" making American mil lionaires by leaps and bounds. With enormous profits steel and ammunition manipulators are bask ing in the sunshine of wealth. - Chas. Schwab is again on the front page, aiter being relegated to the bottom of the market report page for several years. Would like to see Harry Thaw or some other Thaw around. A man down Coos Bay way is named T. T. Hee. Must be a good natured fellow. An Oregon snow storm is a mere jitney compared with the eastern storms that last three or four months. Our little snow snifter simply snips the microbes. . Really and honestly, even if we don't like snow, a little snap is a good thing. Never mind the snow, write those letters anyway.' After. a long hunt the funny men have discovered a lawyer at Dunpliy. 4 SAVINGS DEPOSITS . With the New Year come thoughts of better times, of making more money than we did last year, and of saving more. Open a savings account with a small amount and keep adding to it. Do not wait for a large amount, youn can begin with one dollar. This bank pays 4 per cent com-pound interest on your savings de posits.
