WEDNESDAY, JANUARY S, 19U THE WAR AND THE JEWS A letter sent by a Jewish refugee, a member of the people chosen of God tells in striking language the awtul tragedy of his people in the unholx war that is now cursing Europe Wherever they go they are orderei to move on, making their lives one full of unrest and uncertainty. Bui here is the letter that tells its owe story: It is winter, not a mild winter, a cold one; bitter cold. All day we have been walking. We have no idea where we are going. When a soldier says "Move" a Jew must obey. So Chaia Berl and I move. Our furniture wt left behind. Chaim, our eldest son. is in the army, and we are walking We have been walking since 6 o' clock in the morning. Chaia leans on me, I lean on my stick, and Berl is carried, sometimes in my arms and sometimes in Chaia's. I look at old Reb Srul. bent am" worn like a reed in the wind; he, too. walks. Occasionally I talk to him. 1 try to console him; soon, soon it shall end, this constant walking. We wiK be placed somewhere and allowed to remain. But he only sighs, looks up to heaven, and repeats the word "Peace." Night comes. We have been walk ing for 12 hours. Some have fallen by the road, but we cannot stop, wc must walk. We are crowded into s dilapidated barn; it's cold, bitter cold in there. Surah, the feeble-minded one, has just had an epileptic fit Reb Srul does not feel welL He is pale; I gv to the door to speak to a soldier. "A doctor, please," I plead. "The old man is dying." "Good," laughed he. "Lei him die. One less to take care of." All night we watch Reb Srul die We repeat prayers with him. Nobody sleeps. In the morning Reb Srul is at peace. No more walking for him: the women cry; some of ns wish wc could take his place. We are glaO that he has been excused by the Al mighty One from walking. Some one suggests burial. We arc about to ask for the privilege wher the door opens and the soldier com mands us to get ready to walk. "More Talking" is the pathetic echo thai rings through the room.' We point to the body. A soldier commands us t' walk. A Jew must obey, so we leave the old man in the hands of his God and we walk. A BATTLE CRY. "Mother Jones," of Colorado strike fame, is entitled to the credit of hav ing brought the following poem into public notice. It was given to her by its author, one of the miners in strike torn Colorado. It has been set to music and included in the hymnology of the Labor Unions. It is real poetry and is entitled to a hearing. More than half-beaten, but fearless. Facing the storm and the night: Breathless and reeling, but tearless. Here in the lull of the fight, I who bow not but before Thee, God of the fighting clan; Lifting my fists, I implore Thee, Give me the heart of a man. What tho' I live with the winners, Or perish with those who fall; Only the cowa.ds are sinners, Fighting the fight is all; Strong is the foe, he advances; Snapped is my blade, O Lord; See the proud banners and lances, O, spare me this stub of a sword. Give me no pity nor spare me, Calm not the wrath of my foe; See where he beckons to dare me Bleeding, half-beaten I go. ' Not for Ihe glory of winning, Not for the fear of the night; Shunning the battle is sinning, O, spare me the heart to fight. Red is the mist about me, , Deep is the wound in my side; Coward, thou cricst to flout me, Terrible foe, thou aast lied. Here, with my battle before mo, God of the fighting clan; Grant that the woman who bore me Suffered to suckle a man. FOR NATIONAL DELEGATE. Ex-Sheriff C C. Jackson, of Hal soy, who was in tho city, made the announcement that he will be a can didate for one of the delegates from this district to the national democrat ic convention to convene in St. Louis this year. He deserves the support of the Democrats of this county, among whom he has worked consistently and faithfully during his life. A voter for over forty years he has never been found wanting in service to the party. As sheriff he served the county well and as a citizen he has kept his rec ord clean. Mr. Jackson deserves this special honor, and no doubt the Dem ocrats of this county will be glad to do their part towards giving it to him. A good New Year's res.: "I'll take the Albany Dcm." Hooray. When a fine looking young lady ap proaches a bachelor he should not dodge. It is leap year. Albany is full of old baches who ought to be ashamed of themselves for the fact. The girl with a car will stand the best chance. It is as natural for a boy r girl to throw snowballs as it is for a whale to spurt water. The latest is the periscope bonnet, which enables a girl to see above the heads of those around her. - A Wisconsin judge has held that a wife must be able to cook.
