FAMILIAR SOUND.
Pendleton E. O.: There is a sig
nificance in the fact certain saloon-
men plan to retain their locations af
ter the first of the year despite the
fact the prohibition amendment will
be in effect
Added interest in their proceeding
arises from the fact some of these
same men were conspicuously in the
bootlcgging'business when this coun
ty was dry several years ago.
What does the future have in store
for Pendleton along this line? This
town is the county seat and business
capital of Umatilla county which vot
ed dry by a majority of 1310 votes.
Are the wishes of the people to be
respected in good faith or is Pendle
ton once more to see the bootlegger
in the saddle riding as he sees fit
over the law of the state and over the
plain desires of the voters?
ENCOURAGEMENT WANTED.
If you would step into some great
seat of Power and Plenty, some day
just get into the Habit of Patting
people on the back with a real Pat
of Encouragement.
Give away your, own Success. "
There is nothing in all the world so
stimulating as to feel the thrill of
Hope coloring the cheek of some fel
low to whom you have just given
the Grip of Grit.
Give away your own Success.
Even a race horse goes better after
a pat on the nose. The bootblack
gives you a better polish if you re
member to smile while he shines
Half the wrecks of life are strewn
along the gutter of failure for no
other reasons than this starved for
the want of encouragement. Ex.
JUDGING A DOCTOR.
A physician in an exchange telU
how to judge a good physician. He
says:
. Because he drives your style of car
or attends your church, or joins your
order or trims his whiskers in a man
ner pleasing to your taste, is a mighty
poor reason for employing a physi
cian. Yet it is a potent factor in his
selection in many instances.
A good doctor is one who never
gets through learning. He reads; he
studies: he is active in medical so
ciety sessions; books are much in
evidence and medical journals find a
place in his office.
Not sunrptuousnts but neatness
characterizes the furnishing of his
place of business. Xot foppery but
conservatism marks his dress. He is
clean, even if he is poor. For be it
known that the best doctors are noi
always the biggest money-makers
Still, the good physician is worthy of
his hire: if he fails to collect his fee
in a business like way he is bound to
get behind the times presently, for
want of the wherewithal to buy
books, medical journals and post
graduate courses.

USES LUMBER FOR IN YEAR
Over a million and a quarter board
feet of wood is used annually in the
mines of Oregon for props, !ajsi;:j
ties, and riffle boxes.
x
Oregon consumes 536 board feet of
lumber per capita annually.
x
I n 1914 in the construction of ships
and boats at the shipbuilding yards of
Oregon and Washington, nearly 13,
UXMXX) board feet of high grade lum
ber and timbers were consumed. Aus
tralian ironbark contributed 35.0UO
board feet to this total.
x
To repair the spokes, tongues, and
reaches of broken wagon, the black
smiths and wheelwrights of the towns
and cities of Oregon and Washington
used over 200,000 board feet of oik
ash, hickory, etc. The average cost
per thousand hoard feet of this raw
material was over one hundred dol
lars. A new pro.-ess of creosoting Doug
las fir has recently been developed
which does not impair the strength
of the timber.
DUN SAYS COMMERCE
IS GENERAL OVER 6BUNTRY
Fresh impetus to the forward move
ment is imparted by lower tempera
tures in many sections, which stimu
late the demand for all classes of sea
sonable merchandise, notably cloth
ing, footwear and fuel. As retail dis
tribution quickens and broadens
wholesale departments in turn benefit
and reports from all parts of the
country are remarkably uniform in
disclosing progressive improvement
N'ot only does business continue high
ly favorable in actual performance,
but there is every promise, especially
in industrial lines, of a degree . of ex
pansion limited only by facilities
These are being increased as rapidly
as possible in iron and steel, yet
though more wheels are turning, there
is not sufficient machinery running to
keep pace with the rush of new or
ders, many of which extend far into
1916. - Nothing' in history parallels
existing conditions in the great basic
industry, while all of the minor met
;.s, particularly copper, are more ac
tive, at advancing prices. Generally
manufacturing operations are on a
steadily broadening scale though the
dyestuffs scarcity continues a handi
cap in textile production and the ef
fect of the additions to fhe working
force is now more clearly apparent in
strictly mercantile branches. One rc-
flection of the greater ability and dis
position of the people to purchase is
seen in the enlarged sales of holiday
goods, while it is also significant of
the improved financial position of
consumers that there is a growing de-
man, for the more costly grades of
merchandise. There would be less
warrant for optimism if the business
development were confined, as was
formerly the case, to a few special
lines in a restricted area of the coun
try. But all of the statistical barom-
