men plan to retain their locations af
ter the first of the year despite the
fact the prohibition amendment will
be in effect
Added interest in their proceeding
arises from the fact some of these
same men were conspicuously in the
bootlcgging'business when this coun
ty was dry several years ago.
What does the future have in store
for Pendleton along this line? This
town is the county seat and business
capital of Umatilla county which vot
ed dry by a majority of 1310 votes.
Are the wishes of the people to be
respected in good faith or is Pendle
ton once more to see the bootlegger
in the saddle riding as he sees fit
over the law of the state and over the
plain desires of the voters?

lumber per capita annually.

I n 1914 in the construction of ships
and boats at the shipbuilding yards of
Oregon and Washington, nearly 13,
UXMXX) board feet of high grade lum
ber and timbers were consumed. Aus
tralian ironbark contributed 35.0UO
board feet to this total.

To repair the spokes, tongues, and
reaches of broken wagon, the black
smiths and wheelwrights of the towns
and cities of Oregon and Washington
used over 200,000 board feet of oik
ash, hickory, etc. The average cost
per thousand hoard feet of this raw
material was over one hundred dol
lars. A new pro.-ess of creosoting Doug
las fir has recently been developed
which does not impair the strength
of the timber.

existing conditions in the great basic
industry, while all of the minor met

tive, at advancing prices. Generally
manufacturing operations are on a
steadily broadening scale though the
dyestuffs scarcity continues a handi
cap in textile production and the ef
fect of the additions to fhe working
force is now more clearly apparent in
strictly mercantile branches. One rc-
flection of the greater ability and dis
position of the people to purchase is
seen in the enlarged sales of holiday
goods, while it is also significant of
the improved financial position of
consumers that there is a growing de-
man, for the more costly grades of
merchandise. There would be less
warrant for optimism if the business
development were confined, as was
formerly the case, to a few special
lines in a restricted area of the coun
