It ia what spells victory whether in business or football In the great Michigan gme of foot- ball there was probably nothing that conduced more to victory than the determination of the men to win. Pep was the theme all the way across the country to Lansing. The men had little to lose and much to gain. If they lost they siaiply met the expectations of people generally, and there would he no disgrace. If they won it meant everything to them individually and for their state. So they won, an or ganized fighting machine full of elec tricity. Faint heart never won fair lady and a faint heart is a poor thing anywhere in the world. The man who keeps a stiff upper lip and keeps peg ging away regardless of discourage ments is pretty sure to make it The pessimist, who sees disaster in every thing would make a poor member of the O. A. C. football team or any' thing else. A spirit of optimism is like an electric current in the business af fairs of the world. WASTE. The Democrat is always glad to re ceive live matter on important ques tions from its readers, particularly those that are short and to the point. Here is one from the Atlantic, that is timely: Waste is the crime of today and it is especially the great crime of this awful war; waste in human life, in hope, in love, and in common sav ings of us all. Millions of dollars' worth of the savings of the people 0? this earth, all of tliem our brothers and our sisters, are daily burned np, ex ploded Uti wasted in the madness of the nations; and even that is a trifle when we compare it to the great hu man value of the lives that are lost. It will not make any people rich; and we Americans, rarely fortunate in not being involved in the awful strife, shall find our part of the burden to bear Some time the war will be over, and then waste must stop; it must stop if we are to advance in humanity and civilization over and beyond the yawn ing gap made by the lust of blood, pride, of race tnd the vanity of kings. The war has been in progress but a little while and already the cost of it is being borrowed from infants now at their mothers' breasts, to make good this debauch of blood and fire. And in the very measure that we waste is the sentence at hard labor upon the rising generation prolonged. We cannot get out of it by being American; the debt is upon us, in unequal measure it is true, but the debt, the obligation to make up the losses, is upon us all. Davis Teacher of Art and Voice MISFITS The devil will do well to keep away from the Baptist church while Evan gclist Evans is here. His ears would tingle to the limit. There's just one way to fight him, and that's the red hot way. Soil words don't disturb him. No lives would have been lost in the Coos Bay accident if Carranza is in the saddle and will remain there. Suffrage back east may be under at this election, but it will not remain I under. Eventually the women will win ! out. !
