Here ia the best report for a lonit time from Dun: With cross currents diminishing ii force, the tide of business is rising at an accelerated pace and an era o' widespread activity is in prospect Usually during a transition prn.x' gains are recorded slowly, but strioth mercantile cond'lions have passed t':t stage where progress is difficult of dis cemment, and of late industrial ex pansion has been phenomenally rapid Repors from nearly all sections ' f ''m country tell of the rnchecked Krowtl' of new enterprise, which, while m ini fest in varying deifree in diife'ent lines am1 localitic. is ove-ywherc stimulated by the exfeutio-ia! strength of the fundamental situa tion. Assurance of agricultural sn-- cess, together with the most unlim ited financial resources, hai given the commercial world the confidence es sential to the development of nation al prosperity, and :hc notable im provement in sentim-nr and change of spirit is now more clearly reflec ted in the volume of current transac tions. The latter, with few excep tions, are steadily enlarging, as is ev idenced by the comparisons of ban clearings, railroad earnings, commod commodity prices, unfilled steel ton v --page, idle freight car and other sta tistical barometer. It is not men speculation or hope that starts, many wheels revolving in iron and tee' after an idleness of several years, bui a rush of actual orders that is tax ing the capacity of mills and fur naces to the otmost. With opera tions in the great basic industry on r scale seldom, if ever, equalled, addi tion to working forces are impera tive and the increase in the numbe of men at work mean a broadening of consumptive requirements. Thi? putt more money in circulation anc ultimately benefits all branches o business, causinb dealers to replenisl depleted stocks, making collection more prompt and thu lowering tin commercial death rate. Retail trade the last step in the movement from producer to consumer, is further stim ulated by seasonable weatlier and in some directioins distribution of fall merchandise is exceeding expecta tions. This i particularly true of footwear and wearing apparel in gen eral; domestic buying of leather i also appreciably laxgeryand foreign contracts continue a feature, while more customers have appeared in the dry goods markets and future needs are anticipated with greater freedom Although in most quarters the trend of quotations is distinctly upward, ir many cases advanced wage schedules offset the enhanced wage schedules offset the enhanced cost of commodi ties. In the adjustment to new eco nomic conditions signs are to be ex pected, and for some time to come the situation in different sections and trades is likely to vary considerably. It is apparent, however, that strictly home demands are becoming more of a factor in promoting current pro gress, which, while the direct out growth of the war, rests upon the sol id foundation of agricultural pros perity and an exceptionally strong banking position.
