SATURDAY NIGHT THOUGHTS.
This week has seen the blowing
away of the clouds that showed up
strongly on the horizon in the trou
blc between the -United States and
Germany over the sinking of the
Arabic. Regardless of the jingo press
and jingoists of the country the Unit
ed States continues to sMl screncl)
along in neutral waters, and if it ends
the war this way it will be the great
est victory for righteousness in the
history of nations.
The Corvallis Gazette-Times says
there is nothing to show for the
watchful waiting of the president and
his cabinet That is as Use a state
ment as was ever made, mere politics
of the worst order. On the contrary
there is much to show for it. The
United States is at peace with the na
tions of the world, her sons are not
lying on battlefields full of bullets,
and our country stands out as pre
mier in the nations of the world. Not
a single honor has been lost; but
.greater is the honor. Our self re
spect remains. The conduct of the
' Mexicans is not pleasing to us, nor is
that of t!e countries of Europe. It b
not our business to rush in like a
mastiff and stop the growls of all
the smaller dogs of creation. It is our
business to watch and wait, using our
' best influence for peace and harmony
among the nations of the world, and
their inhabitants.
That a man with a big reputation
can make himself a mcn.ee to a
country is becoming evident in the
case of Mr. Roosevelt. With some
sterling traits of character altogether
he is of such a pugilistic nature tha;
he keeps his wheels turning regard
less of judgment or consequences, do
ing the country harm where he should
seek to do it good.
Bryan offers a wonderful contrast.
However much we may disagree with
the course he took in resigning at a
critical time, it is a fact that his in
fluence all the time is for peace and
civic righteousness, and, it is evi
'dent now, that the course he has pur
sued has helped rather than retarded
the cause of peace.
The organized effort throughout
tie country in reference to safety
first matters is resulting in big things
for people who travel and work. Per
haps more than sny other great con
cern the S. P. has accomplished most,
the result being wonderful in its ex-

Another salesday here. Getting a
little tired but still in the ring. These

should be kept going. Plenty of elec

Circus this week, with animr.l per

has yet been discovered that can ef
face the desire to attend a circus.
whose great point is the circus spirit.

MISFITS
Oregonians want good roads; but
not bonds.
The jeople will stick their stillet

Give Mrs. Taft a good drink of lo

these new drinks going.
About all this new industrial com
nissioti amounts to is the personal
opinions of members, and they ougiit

By the way. Uncle Sam is as easy
is Happy Hooligan; bites at every-

The Petrograds had better tak to
their cellars. Bill's nearly there.
Napoleon is liable to have to take
i back seat in history.
Those Eugene movie (actors are
not in the Albany class. Billy Woods
ind Everett Cummings can give
hem a block and beat them there.
Just now Lillian. Walker is the

bottom of Misfit's heart.

Qualities Which the Eye Cannot See
Fine workmanship, fine adjustment of
parts and fine balance reveal them
selves in the way the car sticks to the
road at high speed.
The car wcitihs only -J pounds, but
that wciKht is so pcriectly distributed
that it holds ste.ulily to a straight

scarcely a particle of vibration even
when the euxinc is exerting its full
