An argument being used for na tional defense it that there are four teen million foreigners, not yet citi zens, in the United States, who in case of war with their fatherlands, would be on that side at once, and hence a menace to our safety. -This, of course, is far-fetched. Of these a good many are women, and the ac tual number who would b a danger ous element is not large, mostly found in the larger cities. Most of the for eign clement in this country would be loyal to the United States. They came here because they wanted to get away from their own country. with its institutions, a great many of them because opposed to militarism and others for different reasons; but ill of them because they preferred the United States to any other coun try. Some may have become dissat isfied here, and there are some an archists around; but the bulk of for eigners at we meet them are loyal to our country, and would probably be to if it came to an issue, no mat ter how much they may now very naturally sympathize with their fath erland. SHOULD BE CAREFUL. Already a number of hunting acci dents have been reported. One re sulted fatally, another was of a ser ious character. Both were no doubt the result of carelessness. Most gun accidents are. The lesson is simply one demanding the greatest care. In some places there were forty or fifty tranters within a comparative small radius, a fact which in itself meant danger to every hunter in the neigh borhood. It is not a matter simply of mistaking a man for a deer, for which there can be absolutely no ex cuse, for no hunter has a right to shoot until his game is out in the open in plain sight; but it is a mat ter of promiscuous shooting at ran dom in the direction in which there is apt to be some one else hunting. The lover of good sport cannot be blamed for hunting for deer, one of the most intensely interesting and ex citing of all game sports; but the pub lic has a right to demand that he should use all the care it is possible for one to exercise. PROBLEM FOR ASSESSORS. Assessors are going to have some full hereafter when it comes to put ting a value on the property of the Oregon and California, or S. P. It has been assessed, or other property like it, at about $16 an acre; but un der the decision of the supreme court it can be sold for only $2.50 an a.-re. and certainly the owner cannot be as sessed for more than he can sell the property. What will the assessor do? As the total valuation placed on the property in the state is $3,330,0110 it is a big thing to settle Some rf the assessors insist that they can assets at full value, acconliuj to the law, regardless of what the company may get for the property. The attorney general is d-ep in the midst of the problem. WANTS TO SHOW US. The Democrat has received a cir cular from New York, which is head ed: "A message to men who know that mirth is medicine and that laugh ter lengthens life." Inside is a picture of a man who has the most wonderful memory ever known, he can give the population of every city in the U. S. over 5,000, etc. That's nothing, Al bany once had an old man who conld give the square miles and population of all the states In the Union and write poetry, and he died without, a cent Another man says he can make a convincing speaker of you, and he has bis fist clinched at if he were going to hit you. A third man is pointing his pencil at you declaring that he can give you a real command of English. Let him tackle Billy Sunday, MISFITS There should be two destroyers for every sub. Bets are 3 to I the big war w ill noi end this year. Umbrageous subject matter for betting. Betier give the money to charity. Our guess is it will not be ended Jan. 1 next. We are glad to say we are generally nis our gurstcs. Lending money to European na ions won't help end the war. Suppose some of the countries go bankrupt, then what? Something really new in the min itrel joke is a rarity. Jokes go in ircles. some of the freshest being ld enough to walk with a wiggle. An old saying that there is nothing new under the sun continues to op erate. Plenty of new combinations, though, for instance in electricity, navigation, and extravagance. About once a day some one insists that the cause of close times is the immense sale of autos. Perhaps, but when you thing of it the auto oijner buys just as many things as anyone else, dresses just as well, eats just as much and runs around more. The point is probably that so much in on ey in autos keeps it out of other en terprises. If men were really such monstros ities as the cartoonist pictures them this would be a homely old world. The Katzenjammer kids for a good many years have been committing 'okes on the major, who continues to bite. That looks crazy, but the world is full of people who never learn by experience.
