Thi ha been a seriou week with the people of the United States on account of the loss of the Lusitama, and the manner in which it has in volved the United States, on account of a good many of our people being on board of Hie destroyed vessel many losing their lives. With other things that have happened onr gov ernment has some problems to set tle that will require long heads, cool ed down to the limit. So far those at the head have shown that they possess equanimity a well as firm ness. . The bitterness of the war ts illus trated in the severe measure taken in London, where naturalized Germans have been mistreated, though they have sworn to be loyal to England. The suspicion is intense. The old saying that blood is thicker than wat er evidently continues to hold good. In personal matters one does well never to enter into a personal com bat unless driven to the wall and compelled to defend himself. Why should not a nation do as individuals. It is not cowardice not to fight with a fellow man over some dispute, of ten of little' importance; but often bravery. At the same time there is . such a thing as international rights that must be respected, and, in a war like this one, the rights of neutrals should remain inviolate, and not be trampled upon. In Oregon there has been very lit tle ot a striking character. Ihe an imal grangers convention is always of importance, a gathering of representa tive men, back of the greatest indus try in the world, the men who hold the purse strings and keep things on the move. The position they take cm leading issues is alw-ys viewed with interest and concern, and generally means a good deal. Even politicians have learned to respect the wants of the farmer. Thework of local talent is tmund to interest at least their friends. We watch professionals critically but when it comes to our people we are verv properly ready to be charitable. Of ten this is not needed. amateurs iiciiuruuy arc irr equals oi profes sionals, sometimes their superiors. All pruicssiouais were once amateurs. rt hnsband and wife living together fifty years is always a pretty picture in the passing show of life, one that calls for pleasant thought 1 and sweet- memories.
