ITS COMING FAST The Oregonian continuea to give facts to show that business is getting back to normal condition, giving figures that speak, making it a matter above sentiment or newspaper boost ing for good influences. All over the country the signs are pointing in the right direction. The Oregonian says The signs of returning confidence in the business world are multiplying at such a rate that, in the belief of fi nancial nlen, it will be many days be fore commercial and industrial activ ity will be on a normal basis. The most, important factor that has con tribured to a reassuring feeling throughout the country was the sud den renewal of activity in the finan cial district of New York. Up to a week or two ago the Wall street sit uation had been almost inactive, com pared with conditions existing before the beginning of the war, and financ ing of the business of the country was slow and uncertain. An indication of the activity in the New York Stock Exchange is noted in the past two days' trading. On Friday transactions aggregated near ly 1,300,000 shares, making it the most noteworthy of any day since July 30 of last year. In two hours Saturday morning the exchange recorded sales totaling 800,000 shares. Due to several favorable factors the securities market is getting stronger and general peblie in'erest seems to be expanding. WARNING FROM EUROPE. The United States ought to be learning some lessons from the great war in Europe, and undoubtedly is. Certainly as never before in the his tory of the world is the old world speaking to the new world, and this great republic should sit down and think and learn a lesson for all time. One Eastern paper gives the follow ing as a warning: "Beware of guns. Banish the im plements of hate from before your eyes. Take your mind off the ma chinery of slaughter. Cease to de light in the engines of destruction. Trust in reason. Have faith in broth erhood. Believe in love. Build your civilization on the principle of good will. Bind all the nations of the Western Hemisphere into a federa tion which, by its fidelity to the law of kindness and its devotion to the Prince of Peace, shall become at once the inspiration and the hope of the world." KNOCKERS AND BOOSTERS. Writers have vied with each other in saying the meanest thing they can about knockers, and the best things they can about boosters, and this is a good idea. The average person likes to see the knocker knocked un til he looks like a pancake, and hence the following which has been going the rounds will be appreciated: When the Creator had made all the good things, there was still some dir ty work to do, so he made the beasts and reptiles and poisonous insects, and when he had finished he has some scraps that were too bad to put into the rattlesnake, the hyena, the scor pion and he skunk, so he put all these together, covered them with suspi cion, wrapped in with jealousy, mark ed it with a yellow streak, nnd called it a 'Knocker." The proudct was so fearful to con template that he had to make some thing to counteract it, so he took avl sunbeam and put in the heart of a child, the brain of a man, wrapped this in civic pride, covered it with brotherly love, gave it a mask of vel vet, a grip of steel, made 'it a. lover of fields and flowers and manly sports, a believer in equality and jus tice, and called it a "Booster." And ever aince these two were, mortal man has had the privilege of choosing his associates. MISFITS Nothing is more pleasing in every day life than an exhibition of real sell denial. It stands out like a mountain peak. Some'of the greatest people of the world arc never heard from outsido their own city. There are dilfereut kinds of greatness. Theirs is one. " What do life's blessings amount to if received alone? Here is a good one, given us by A reader The ingrate can only be great in littleness. And here is another: A thankful heart can hare a good time even in hard times. So many men are declaring that times are improving that we have about concluded the fact is surely true. Drummers are pretty well post ed men about things, being in a po sition to speak authoritatively, par ticularly those who have been cover ing a field for a long time and have their regular trade. Russia keeps bringing new sol diers forward for the sacrifice, like Germany and the others. Where do they come from? In big type a paper says KEEP WELL.
