C If there is a man in this nation, of promi nence in political life, who can aflorj to rest upon his lautels aod enjoy the present finan. cial situation from a personal standpoint, that man is our late honored chief magistrate Benjamin Harrisan, of Indiana. While he Is a patriotic and public spirited man, he would be more than human did he not en joy in a sense the results of the change from the sound industrial and financial policy on which his administration stood to the uncertain policy of his successor, ful1 of ague hints of radical tariff revision which the democratic congress hesitates to inau eurate: of an income tax to which nine tenths of those who have incomes in excess of the proposed standard are opposed, and of the free coinage of silver upon which the democratic partv and its chief advisers are divided and perplexed. Having brought the country to a degree of prosperity never before attained, President Harrison and his advisers were discredited by the very people who reaped the greatest Deneht, the so-called "labor voters." He can afford to look on serenely while his successor sweats and worries at the he Im striving blindly to map out a course by which the eood old ship of state, heavily laboring in the nnancial break' era into which she was betrayed by a sud den change of steersman last November, may reach again the smooth sea ot prosper ity. It Is seldom that a president seeking a re-eiecnon and meeting defeat is so thor oughly vindicated by evema In so short a space of time, and the country, while de ploring its own condition, may well con gratulate the tx-president and hit chief advisers of the late administration. Yes, we are now reaping the whirl wind as the necessary harvest springing from the evils of Sherman and McKinlcy laws which lie helped to sow. lie can look on serenely at tho dire consequences of the vicims legislation of his own administration, can he? The public are not all lools, The Ortgonian may succeed in fooling al the people some tlncs,and part of the p opl all the time, but its editor Is entirely too finite in his cranium to tool all the people all the time. The people, (the lntehlgent part of them.) know whom to ho'd respon aible tor the vicious revenue and financial system that has brought stagnation the country. It is not a democratic administration that causes ihe hard times. John B Henderson a nun of great ability, wide and comprehen sive experience, conscientious devetion to what he conceives to be right and withal a stern republican ga) s; "It seems to rr-e demonstrable, so far as a financial proposi tion can be logically demsnstrated, tint the present situation is not the result of spec ulation, of overtrading or fad business methods, but largely if not wholly, produ ced by the silver legislation cf congress." Mr. Henderson Is good authority and this completely refutes the foolish talk of repub lican organs about hard times dining on as a result of a democratic adminiflratiou. The present silver law which Mr. Hender son says piofuccd these hard times was passed oy a congress that was republican In both branches anl approved by a republican president. People can draw their own con clusions. The man ean hardly be an all-ruund,gocd farmer who alluws his own family to lack for the choicest fruits and vegetsb'rs that, with his own labor, his own land could well produce.
