gaUit Democrat. democrats and republicans alike will sym paihlse with Governor McKlnley In his fi nancial misfortunes. Jufye Jackson was confirmed at Supreme Judge without the formality of a division or yea and nay vo'c. W N Roach, a democrat, was elected I'nlted States senator from North Dakota, yesterday. This will give the democrats just half the senate, which, with the casting vote of Vice president Stevenson makes a majority. The democrats will very likely elect a sena tor from Montana. Tlie Democrat believes it voices the sentiments of nine-tenths of the taxpayers of Linn county when it gives expression to the opinion that Senators Weatlierford and Myers and representatives lilevins, Miller and Elmore were faithful servants of the pjople and that the latter made no mistake in their election. A two billion dollar congress was utterly condemned by the votes of the people of the country. We believe that a more than two million dollar legislature will meet the same deserved fate at the hands of the voters of Oregon In June 1894. The legislature was largely republics In both branches and that party will be held responsible (or this in excusable extravagance. 1 The republican party leaders in this state are shaking their head with an ominous turn as they discuss the load the party will have to carry In the campaign of 1894. Toe extravagences of the state legislature are without parallel la this state, and in con templating their extent we involuntarily turn our eyes to the ReeJ congress (or a precedent. The only tin plate mill in operation now is the McKinley plant that grinds the tax out of the American consumer. Mr Clnrkson seems to have forgotten the fact that President Harrison nt one time appointed a firt assistant postmaster ceneral who didn't reflect any remarkable honor upon his administration. Senator I'add'Jck was one of the men who recognized the danger of McKinleyism when the tariff bill wm pending in the Fifty first congress. His defeat for the senate will undoubtedly confirm his opinion on that point. The captain of the Kugene cadets will send two cannon 10 Portlund for the use of the Thurman legion on the day of the Cleveland inauguration Hood enough. Hurrah for Kugjno! and tho captain of the cadets. P L Fountain of Kluiuatli county, but formerly of Linn county, is n candidate for the Klamath Indian Agency. Ho has the in dorsement of the democratic county central committee of Klamath county. Daricy Martin of Cbrvallis is stlso a candidate. It is frequently said that some men have greatness thrust upon them. The reverse is true, sometimes, as happened to president Fulton during the closing hours of the sen ate. Following in the footsteps of the noto rious Reed, he counted twelve senators as voting "no" v.ho had not voted at all. This was done to carry through a bill cniascula ting from the Australian ballot law someo' Us best features. Here Fulton had littleness cast upon him as he was unequal to the task of doing right. His conduct will rise up to fetter him greatly in the future. The governor has but one course to pur buo in regard to the Durham bill which strips tho Australian ballot law of nearly nil its merit, and which was railroaded through the sennto by the adoption of Czar liecd tactics, and thut is to veto it. It would have been impossible to puss It had not Fulton, tho provident of the senate, adopted the Heed tactics of ruling thut a member should be recorded as voting "no" j when such member saw fit to not vote at till. Veto it, governor. It is a good place for a little veto. Waldo M Potter, register of tho United States Land Office at Fargo North Dakota, who carried the sobriquet of 'Father of the Republican Party in North Dakota, comes out in a scathing letter, in which ho re nounces all allegiance to tho republican puty and asserts that the democracy of l! rover Cleveland is preferable. For 12 yeirs, ho says, he has watched tho action of tho republican bosses in Ibis slate and has found them to be a set of tyrants who have dragged down tho party from a majority of two-thirds of the voters to ignominious defeat. Governor Ponneyer speaking of the np p jirit mont of Crosbam for secretary of Into by Cleveland says: "It would accord with the eternal fitness of things if Mr Cleveland, who bolted and disregarded tho wishes of the regular dem ocratic organization of New York regard ing a candidate for tho presidency, should confer a cabinet appointment on Air tlres liam, who bolted the nomination of his party, tjuch n appointment would be a prcmimi on bolting, conferred by n bolter." Now, this statement about Cleveland's belting is far fetched. He was a candidate I jr president and, notwithstanding his own state void against him, he was fairly nom inttjdnnd overwhelmingly elected. His, own state by a majority of nearly fiO.000 showed his popularity there. His F.xcel lenoy attempts to heap upon Mr Cleveland tho odium of being a bolter. 'Misery loves company,' and wo mppoFO tho governor wants some ono to go along with him and sharo theodium of being a bolter as the fact is notorious that tho governor bolted both state anil national tickets last year The governor seems to bo making his case worse.
