He said that college men usually graduated democrats even when they had been brought up in the republican political faith and entered college with strong republican convictions. Having passed through the order of a college education and come out unscathed he wished as an ardent member of the party to have some plan adopted by which the democratic virus lurking in a liberal education might be met and coun teracted. He appealed to the committee to co operato with tl e "Republican College League" in providing ths antidote, and, strangely encngh, seemed to think that money was the thing to accomplish the purpose. Just how money could be used to overcome convictions that resulted from enlightenment this republican collegiate could not take time to explain. Nor would it be an easy matter. Young republicans like himself, who continue to be republicans in spite of a liberal education, might be susceptible to the influence of money. But those who are broad and honest enough to lay aside preconceived prejudices when educatun convinces their judgments that those prejudices aro wrong, are made of different stuff. The only way to prevent this class of young men from graduating as democrats is to abolish our colleges altogether. It fs a glorious vindication of the democ racy that liberal education only serves to strengthen its ranks. The hope of the country is in the intelligent nnd educated youth whom our colleges aro Bending out into the world. They will soon take their places in the management of the country's affairs and help to shape its destiny. All of them are welcome to membership in the democratic family no matter how strongly they were prejudiced against democratic principles before their eyes had been open ed by a liberal education Whether the representative of the "Re publican Collego League" succeeded in getting any money from the committee we lo not know, nor is it a matter of any consequence. The election of November proved that collegiates of republican ante cedents were still graduating as democrats and voting their educated opinions. Money could not entice them back into the old republican pathways. Tne American college is a good thing. Aut those hidebound republicans who dc not want their sons to become democrats would better keep them at home.
