Many of the leaders of that movement in this state were chary of the tariff question lx causo tlioy feux-d they would lecciro accessions from the republicans if they took n stand in favor of tariff reduction, and that they would re:eivo nono from 11 democrats if they did not take such stand in favor cf reduction. So, many of them assumed tin position that thcro was but little difference between republicans un.l democrats on this question and thut they were, par excellence, the true tariff reform era of the day, albeit they never did, not even in their national platform, tell the public what the position of their party was on that question. liut they sought with much enerirv and zeal to make tho tariff question ono of minor importance in the campaign, and to substitute free coina. tuUreasury and some others as the leading issues of the day. This was intended to make it easy for democrats who bad former' ly lecn strong in their convictions that the tariff should be materially reduced, to leav the democratic party and unito with the populists. Touching these falsa p retimes, and 'ho allegation nindo by the repub lican pre that tin resent election of Crisp as speaker of thu house, was to be regarded as evidence of tho fact that the democrats wero preparing to desert their attitude on tho tariff question the Hhmo chat in its weekly issue of December 11th lSOIsnitl: "But the Pkmocii.vt would expect, and hope for, tho defeat of the party if it should now desert its tariff views." This was no idle talk. The party would luvo bom defeated had it not taken tho bold stand it did on the tariff quostiun For making tho nbove statement in Ito- combor 1K9i the Demock vt was called Bjverley to task by ono of its subscribers (whom we had known many yoars as n consistent democrat) for the Ukmociiat'i threat (as ho called it,) to leave tho party, liut alas! how varied aro tho mutations of the human mind. In a month from that date this same democrat, with others, was n full fledged populist and gave ai hie time and talent in the effort to defeat the democratic parly and its nominees. Hut wo mention all these facts as merely pre liminary to the main subject matter of this article. "SlmH tivrtbtlatiJT rtformY' For democrats, this is a momentous, a vital question If the party is pledged to any one policy more emphatically than nnother it is to redeem the solemn plcdgo of a national reduction in tariff charges. And what nro theso pledges? In the national convention at Chicago tho party solemnly declared : "Wo declaro it to bo n fundamental principle of tho democratic party that the federal government has no constitutional power to impose and collect tariff duties except for tho purpose of revenue only and we demand that the collection of such taxes shall be limited to tho necessities of the government when hones' ly and econom ically administered." This language Is plain ami needs no hair splitting to be able to understand it. The people, on this pledge confided the control of the whole law making power of the government t J the democrats, and if they fcuceoed in preventing the republicans from wresting the senato from them, it will be their duty, nye, it will ba a pirty necessity to redeem their pledges of tariff legislation. We feel confident that with such men as Cleveland, Carlisle, Wilson, rainier the llieckinridges, McMillan and others in 1 10 lead, the f.nth of the people in the democratic part)', as expressed at the polls, will be fully justified. The democratic parly must keep itself in close touch with the people if it hopes to remain in power. WAS CI.AUKSON A TKAITOIt ? Carter was in favor of denounc ing tho conspiracy, but the president over ruled him, saying that such a course would do moro harm than good. It was finally determined to notify the fr ends of the president to be on their guard and, without lotting the parties know that they were suspected, to take from them tho direct management of the campaign. This policy was pursued during the remainder of the campaign. No class of men can object to an executive flicerdetmnd!ng that they shall'simplyobey the law.
