Protectionist profess lo bcilcve that a high tariff secures good wages to laborers, and this fact they have n.aintalnd was the main reason for adopting protection as a national policy. That the protection svstem has nothing to do in securing good wages to labor people is so plain that resort to proof is hardly necessary any more. Gladstone and other English economists show by history and statistics that ag-s in England have been much better since that nation adoDted "free trede" than be tore under protection. Wages todjv are much better in England where"fiee trade" prevails than in any of England's ,ie!gh bors, (France, Spain, Germany, Italy, Russia etc.,) where the protec ivj policy prevails. Wages are good in the United Statett not as the result of protection, but despite of h. No manufacturer in the ln ted States pays any better wages because he is protected. When he employs labor he does like all other people. He hires as cheaply as lit can. And to 6uch an extent have manufacturers Mudied the subject that In many places in the east they have wages reduced down to the living point for laborers who aie completely in their po.v er. Everything else is protected except the laborei himself. Foreign labor may come In free from England, France, Germany, Russia etc., and compete with our home laborers without question, and the manu facturer raises no objection, and why? Simply because he knows well that more laborers means cheaper labor, and that is what he wants. But when it comes to bringing into this country from foreign countries the product of cheap foreign la bor the manufacturer objects, and why? Simply because he knows th&t more goods means cheaper goods and this he does not want. The great desire of his heart Is to have cheap labor and hihpriced goods, for In that is his great piofit.
