An Oregon paper shouts as follows:
Our weather compares verv favorably
with the weather in the East. Here
flowers have been In bloom In the vards

There must be a war in store for our
country the way boy babies are arriving

16th, there were born to Mrs Lyman
Potter, who lives cast of Salem three tine
boys, total weight sixteen pounds. They
are healthy fellows. The mother is doing
well. The triplets have eacli a good head
of dark hair. Mrs Potter was formerly
Miss Ora Wadsworth, of Salem, and ha's
two older children. The babies would
form a good item in Oregon's contribu
tion to the World's fair. Journal.

line runs from Yallulu Junction to Pendle
ton, in Oregon, and to Walla Walla in
Washington, a distance of ninety-threo
miles. Tliers is a hnim-li sixty-rive miles in
length from Pendleton to Atliena, formerly
Ci'iiterville' one of twenty-two miles from
Eureka .lunotinn to Kureka Flat, and 0110
from Walla Walla to Dayton, fhirtv-fivo

Herald from Puerto Calello, Venezuela,

ernment troops April 14. At sundown.

gents under the command of General Mora,
who were entrenched at a spot just beyond
Polito. Twice the government soldiers at
tacked the enemy and failed to drive it from
its position. Discouraged over their ill suc
cess, Palucio's troops showed signs of panic,
but under the stirring appeals of their lead
ers, they rallied and again charged the foe.
The encounter was brief, hut furious. They
were defeated all along the line, unci turn
ing, fled in every direction.
I nforlunnle Miners.
Minkhsvili.e, Pa April 29. A horrible
accident, by which ten or twelve miners
lost their lives, occurred this evening at the
Lytic colliery, located on Primrose Mount
ain, several miles northwest of here. The
works tap the great Wolf Creek collier-,
which has been idle for some years, owing
to large accumulations of water. The old
water lies in it, and it was the sudden
bursting through of one or two of these de
posits that caught the unfortunate miners
while at work. Three American miners,
named Polbin. Dell and lhiggy, are among
the dead, and it is thought nt least six Hun
gnrian unci Italian laborers are also drown
ed. There were several score of uien inside
at the time. Many of them swam out.

about 500 men are now at work on the As
toria Portland. The headcpiarters in the
field are on the south fork of the Lewis and
Clark Kiver, whence the track will trend
eastward to the Nehalem Kiver and thence
to Hilkboro. The men arc paid 82 a day,
and boardcosls So a week. Mules, horses
and grading material have been brought
here from the Great Northern, by way of
Kalama. ( )n arrivin5r here, the boats and
barges proceed to the Lewis and Clark and
sail up that river as far as they can. Con
tractors Corey Drcs Co have sub-let a part
of the work.
The lloolliers
CiuTituiF., O T April 20. It rained the
greatet part of the night and turned ver
cold this morning and is still misty. The
thousands who are in the new lands with
out shelter, suffer greatly. It is reported
two rival colonies cpiarrelled over the right
of precedence at South Cnnadirn Ford, anil
four men were shot, two seriously. North
of Kingfisher, a negro was shot by a cow
boy, who jumped his claim.

morning Okarche was a lonely depot on the
Hock Island road. This morning it has
1"00 inhabitants, including twenty women.
There is a grcieerv store and luinlier yard,
both doing a rushing business. About the
first men to alight were two drummers, who ;
went right to work taking orders.
