An L1NNVS MARION Astounding Array Figures! of TAX I'AYEItS 11EA!)!! On feveral occasions recently, tho Salem Journal lias hinted that county affairs in Linn county uniler continued demccraticcon trol have not resulted in the promotion of the interests of the people and tax payers of the county, mid that tins has resulted in the formation of a third party. The ri.MO hat believes that nolhinjr should bo concealed from tho tax payers of the enmity that af fects their tubstantial interests, hence we have taken up the tedious ta-k rf luakiin; a comparison of the manner and wayinwhich county mutters have been carried on in Linn and Marion counties iiuriiij; the last twenty years the former under democratic. nnd the latter under republican rule, mainly. During the first ten years of this period the population of the two counties was nearly cipiai. i luring tne latter ten years, popu lation has increased more rapidly in Marion than in Linn, on account of the fact that the capital of the state is in that county. Tl. f..H : i 1 . ., xne iviimwiig; uoiuiar statement snows llle amount of taxes levied in each county fox county furoKf only for each year for the period mentioned. It also shows the rut of levy for each year. State and school tax es have been omitted for the reason that they are the same in all counties in the state. There is no reason why taxation should be higher in Jlarion than in Linn. Crime should be no more prevalent in the one than in the other county. The (.-eographical area of Linn county is three and n fourth times us many fipiare miles as Marion. This would imply more money for roads and bridges than in -Marion. From these fig ures it will be seen that the average ta.'r of levy ii Marion cou.-.ty for the twenty years is 10l';i' mills and the average rate in Linn for the fame jeriod is 5.9 mills. The whole amount collected in Marioner cohm . towj only during the twenty years was 89:10.991.43 and the whole amount collected I in Lmn during the same time. Jor county purposes only, was $.'iS:!.S"i7.0;. showing that during that period the tax payers of Jlrj-ion were taxed 8-'j7,l(l.-10 more than those of Linn. The average yearly amount levied in Marion was f'l'i. 049.."7 and in Linn it was 629,191.:). This astounding array of figures leads inevitably to but one conclusion. That the republicans of Marion county have been grossly derelict in their duty to the taxpayer of that county and that the democrats of Linn have been faithful to the pledges which they have from time to time made to the tax payers of Linn. It leads to this further truth: that there' is no occasion for complaint amone; tlie tax payers of Linn and that they should con'inue the democratic party in power, and that it is worthy of much emphasis " f st; .'incut thai there is ample reason not only for complaint among the taxpayers of Marion, but that the monstrous evil of ex travagance that prevails in the manage ment of county affairs in that county calls loudly for a change. There is heard a mar iner now and then from some taxpayer in our own county that our taxes are high. 'W earnestly call the attention of such to the above statement and would inquire how he would like to change the burden of Linn counly taxation for that of Marion. 'i have made this showing primarily to de fend the good name of Linn against the hints heretofore thrown out bv the Journal of Salem, but we must confess that we think that if these figures could be placed before the taxpayer.!!! Marion it would dis close 10 mem a voiiniuoii ot tilings never before dreame 1 of by many of them, Hut read and study carefully the figures in tho fet dement : The total taxable property ofPendle ton is 1,3'J4,320, less than that of 1891. The lienvlest individual taxpayer there is Levy Ankeny, w ho pays on $42,900. The Journal says : Miss Klla Young was arrested at noon for selling goods without a license and lined $17.00. She will serve nine days in the city jail un less released. This is tho young woman who has defied the city authorities in not taking out a license. The ordinance requires that to peddle anything for a single day one mu?t take out a three months license at $15. The city officials have only done their duty. The Statesman concludes the ease as follows : She stayed in jail all day, de spito the pleadinus of svmputhetic acquaintances, but as night came ou and ilarkness crept through the liar red win dows she gave in and thought it would he much better to bo free. A number of people who had taken ui'v upon her contributed enough for her bail and she was released. i ne i iiemnwa. correspondent ora Sa lem paper tells about a young 'man v. ho neeiis a medal lor "thrnsliniK tlie kind of a young man w ho is a nuisance in f.nv community: A smart alleck" young man near nero amused Himself lately talking about two or or three vounir la dies in the neighborhood and bragging what he had done and could do with theni, etc., nnd when one of tho young ladies "best fellow" heard of it be made the tradueer eat his words aud a few of his front teeth, blacked his eves. and save the young scamp two hours to get out of the countv.
