' i - THE SOLID SOUTH The quadrennial slanders upon the south are beginningto appear in the bourbon re publican papers of the north, exhibiting in nearly every instance either dense ignorance or else a most willful disregard for truth. One of them says: "The south is the drag on the car of national progress." What is meant by this is shown in the next sentence, which reads: "It casts 159 electoral votes for the democratic candidate for president. ' What is really meant, then is that the south is the drag on the car of the republi can party, not national progress and success. The southern people can scarcely bo blamed for voting for democratic candidates for president. They had a taste of republi can rule after the war that they do well not to forget. They had Moses in South Carolina, Dorsey in Arkansas, Pinchbeck in Louisiana and others of like character in the highest positions of power in the several states. They had republican legislatures, in many cases a majority of negroes, many of whom could not read or write. They had their tax rates multiplied and their schools left unsupported- They had a reign of rapine, but littla less devastating and oppressive than the war. It was not until the repub lican United States marshals and soldiers were withdrawn, and the intelligence and industry of that region were given a chance to exert itself and to become again domi nant in matters of local government, that the south began to recover and progress and prosper. And since then, in progress and prosperity, it has kept even with the north, and will continue to do so if the blighting touch of the republicon party can be kept from its fair face. The Lodge force bill of the last congress was designed to overrule and override pop ular government at the south, and to again turn it over to ignorance and avarice, merely to save the republican party from defeat and dissolution. It is not strange that the southern states became aroused and alarm ed when they were made aware of this do sign. It meant turmoil, strife, bitterness, bloodshed; it meant a reversal of the wheels of the car of progress; it meant n sudden and sure check to prosperity; it meant an other carnival of misrule; it meant disaster in ten thousand forms and places and ruin in many. It is no wonder that the south is solid; no wonder that if it had not been so before It should be so now, after this last attempt to mal.e it a province for the fatten ing of republican party despoilers. Yet to their everlasting credit bo it "C menibered, there were a few rcpub'ieius in congress who refused to consent to this Kicking of thesouth fur partisan purposes; and to the credit of voters of the north they set their seal of condemnation upon the nefarious plot in the elections of b'M. Not all republicans in the north are of the Har ris m-Lodge-Heed stripe. Yes, the south will cast 159 votes for the democratic candidate, and it has good and sufficient reasons for doing so. Evening A coffee saWsman writes thus In com menting on the President's proclamation levying a tax of 3 cents a pound on S7,oo, 000 pounds of coifcc: "This country consumes more Mar acalbo coffee than any other on the globe. This tax, however, will lalse the price to such a figure that the merchants will have to abandon, to a large extent, the use of it and adopt some other grade, likely Santos. This, of course, will have the effect of In creasing the demand for this grade and mutually raising the price. You cannot touch one of coffee without having in the end every other grade respond In sympa thy. But the republican party has always been In favor of putting a tax on goods where it affected the consumer the most. Thut U the reason that I am for Grover Cleveland first, last and always." If Mr Harrison, having failed to arrange a set-to with Chile, should not .succeed in "getting on a'little go" with John Hull, why shouldn't he send a "deli" to John Chinaman? There nre pl'.nty of unsettled questions that could be made living issues. John is only a heathen and needs convert ing. A good missionary issue next No vember will win more votes than a salad of mare clausum seals and modus vivendi. Democrats in congress Bhould remember that the greatest of all the issues is whether the republican party shall carry the next presidential election, enact a I'orccbill tuid continue itself in (ower indefinitely. No mistake should 1 made which shall bring about a consummat ion which would be so detrimental to the prosperity of the whole leople. At the democratic county convention held nt Baker city a few days ago a vote for presidential preferences was taken which resulted as follows: Cleveland 5S, Hill 1 2, Palmer 4, Bland 3, Springer 1, Boies 3, Flower J, U01 man I, Carlisle 1. This Is a true Index to public lentiment throughout the state. In I.'.nn county the proportion of Cleveland men Is much larger than the above. rjlt appears that the Inquiry Into the ef fect of tariffs, past and present, upon wages and cost of living, which has been under prosecution by a sub-committee of the Finance committee of the senate for some time past, Is In a fair way toward completion. A special Investigation of the operations of the McKlnley law Is among the objects of the Inquiry. The scope of this portion of the Inquiry has been Indicated In these colunns hereto fore. The committee ha been collect'ng statistics ul the prices of commiidhies en -entering Into the consumption of the peo ple of seventy industrial centers and county towns for each month from June I, 18S9, to September i, JS91. The com modlties selected number 21 land were se lected with the view of representing fair ly all articles which enter either directly or Indirectly Into the expense of living, In cluding in addition to articles of food and clothing, which enter directly Into the cost of living, selected articles of hardware, building materials, etc., which through the cost of building effect the cost of rent What will be shown by the results of the Inquiry Is not known. Requests for per mission to use the Information gathered by the sub-committee in the tariff debates have been made by congressmen, but have been denied because the ptmmtttee Is un willing to have the material go out to the public In fragments. The results of the Inquiry promise to be of great value, par ticularly In view of the fact testified to by Commissioner VVilght, of the Depaitment of Labor, who has cooperated with the commltteee.that the chief aim of the com mtttee has been to secure absolutely lm- partials results. Bradttreets, The Commercial Advertiser's Washing- ton City special says: A statement was made to your correspondent today, upon the best authority, that Harrison did not want a renomlnatlon and he Is very doubt ful about letting his name go before the convention at Minneapolis. It was not asserted that Harrison positively would not accept, but It was said that he was dis inclined to run again and would not ac cept the nomination unless it came to him without the least opposition and the situ ation seemed to make his reelection reas anably sure. It lt understood that Hirrison does not object to the nomination of either Reed or Allison. Nearly all the Ashland delegates are for Hermann. II 15 Miller carried his town primaries with 67 votes against him. The Klamath county republican primaries held Saturday went for Hermann for con gress and Fred Coprswell for circuit judge.
