A protection contemporary calls upon the Democrat "and other free traJe pa pers" (note the humor In this) to make a note of the fact that the McKinley law gi'es us free sugar, and that the people consumed 67.46 per head last year against 54.56 In the year 1S90. This extremely kind and accommodating contemporary further adds, that this is a present of thir teen pounds of suga- to every man, wo man end child in this happy land of ours and all ls the result of the McKinley law. Now, this Is the very thing that the Dem ocrat editor has been noting for several months with the liveliest aattvfnction, and we have taken some pains to impress up on the minds of our "free trade" readers the imprcsslvcncss of this fact. With ex treme satisfaction ue note the f?ct that these self-same free trade readers have fallen Into a train ol reasoning like this: If taking the tariff off sugar has so letsentd its price that each of us can now bay thirteen pounds more for the same sum of money, will not taking the tariff off wool enable us to buy more clothing, blankets and other necessary woolen goods, and taking the tariff off lumber enable us to build or rent better houses for the same money? And will not removing, or reducing, the taiiff on tin-plate, or cut lery, or glassware and crockery, enable us to enjoy more of these comforts and nec essaries without additional cost? Sugar is all very well as far as it goes, but we cannot I've on sugar alone, even when moistened with something else. SVe need clothing and shelter and furniture and tableware and numerous other things o make us comfortable and decent, all of which are now so heavily taxed by the tariff that our supply of them is less than we need or should otherwise have. Moreover, the free trade reformer is not ing another thing. If taking the tariff o ff an aiticle cheapens its cost, nnd cheapen ing Its cost stimulates and greatly increases the consumption of it, more labor must be employed in its production. The Increased consumption of sugar in lSoi over the previous year, due to the fall In Us price, was 363,000 tons, all of which was re fined in this oun'.ry, and thus called for a lai-e additional number of American workman at the rate of wages previously pievailing. Hence we have more sugar and more em ployinent for labor by removing a duty, whereas if the McKinley bill had added 1 cent a pound to the sugar tariff there would have been lesa sugar and less emp'oyment for labor. It will not do now to say that the sugar tariff was an exception to the rule, for It was in connection with this very tariff that "senator Edmunds, certainly not the least acute and able of the protectionist speak ers in the senate, was so carried away by what he conceived to be the conclusive ness of his argument, that the tariff was a tax on the foreign producer and not on the home consumer, that he challenged the other side to produce "a single instance In national or human experience" where the increase of a duty by a country has in creased the price of the article to the con sumer, or where the diminution of a duty by a country lias diminished its price to the consumer, or where putting the article entirely upon the free list has worked any essential ur npri'.ciiible.ur even observable benefit 10 the people the I'nitcJ Sia'.es or any other people that consumed the commodity so brought iti." Senator Edmunds correctly and ably stated the logic of protection . The removal of the sugar tariff has given us the Incxorble logic of facts.
