THE CONVENTION TO-MOUUOW. No more important duty crer devolved upon a democratic convention in Linn county than upon that which convenes in this city to morrow. The frit duty is to the entire peo ple of the county cf all political fall!'.!, re publicans and third patty people as well as democrats. This is the first great duty ot citizenship and consists in nominating candi dates who are henest, and competent This settled, the next duty of each delegate is to labor to secure the nomination of candi dates that will meet the approbation of the democratic voters of tlie county and thus make a strong ticlcet, one that can lead the party ta a greAt victory, such a victory as we secured two years ego. The fir st duty of each delegate is to the entire rcup'e, the sccnn.l is to the rarty and thiid and fast to carry out his own personal choice. Gentlemen of the con rention, it is best to be fiank. There is much confusion in politics in Lir.n county. Tncre are many unknown quantities and uncertain elements. All of these will be resolved in favor of the democrat if a good satisfactory ticket is nominated in an open satisfactory way. Remember f.iat the interest of every and all candidates is secondary and subordi nate to the welfare of the party. Therefore be prepared to sacrifice your own personal choice for the success of the party. The Democrat lias bat one desire, and that is to see the convention conducted in such a way and such a ticket nominated as will meet the expectations of the people cf the county and such ticket will be elected. VIVE VOCE VOTING. To the delegates to the county conventicn to-morrow, we desire to submit these facts. Four yearf ago the democrats throughout the county very generally expressed themselves in favor of the vive voce metlnd of voting in the convention. The convention saw fit to adopt the secret ballot. The following was the result; The democrats elec'.ej county clerk, by 43 majority, recorder by 24 majority, sheriff t'y loo majority, treasurer by 192 majority, one county commissioner by 23 majority and the other by 14, assessor by 131 majority, school supt. 123 majority, survejor 61 anil coroner 195 majority. The republicans eLcted the county judge. Two years ago tlie democrats were likewise in favcrof an open convention and the convention respected their wish by sdopting the vive voce method of voting. The following was the result: The democrats elected the county cleik by 527 majoiity, sheiiff 676 majority, commissioner 4y3 ma jority, recorder 6S6 majoii'y, treasurer O5S majority, assessor 443 majority, school supt. 329 majority, coroner 3'jj majority. Does any delegate have any doubt about the course to pursue in tin's matter? The mass of the voters of the party is almost unanimous in their wish thtt the convention should be an open one. Let tiis wish of the voteis be re- spveted and all will be well. We 'nust have the people on our side if we win- Let every di-legatc represent the wishes of his precinct anout this matter. The house committee on election of presi dent and viie president hits authorized Hep. resentafrive Craig to prepare for submission to the honsea joint resolution propositi'' the substitution of the lilst day of 1'ecember for the fourth of March as the commence inent and termination of official terms of members ns the houseof representatives and L'nited States senators, and providing that congress shall hold its, annual meeting the second Monday in January, and substitut ing the :50th of April for the 4th of March its the date for the commencement and limi tation of the term of president and vice presided. The census returns for New York City are all in, with the exception of two election districts. The total population of twenty-four assembly districts, accord ing to the enumeration, is I,7''5i29.v This is about 300,000 more than that shown by the defective 1'orter census. The total population of Jirooklyn, according to the census returns so far handed, in, with the exception of one district, is 953 33S. The missing district will probably bring it up to 955,000. The federal census for 1S90 was So6,34i, and the police census, four months later, S.s3 945. At a meeting and banquet of the demo crat club in New York City a few even ing since Mr Forgnhar u Tammany mem ber of the legislature drew forth much applause when he said that although Tammany Hall might be in favor of Sen ator Hill's nomination for President, still the old orgrnlzatlon would give a hearty and loyal support to Grover Cleveland should he secure the prize. A dispatch from Covington, Georgia, says: President L F Livingston, ot the State Alliance of Georgia, addressed a mass meeting of live thousand alliance men here today. The following resolution was tin animously passed: "That we, the democratic and alliance citizens of Newton county, most heartil y Indorse Col. Livingston's position opposed to the formation of a third party at this time." In bis speech Col. Livingston declared that before his election SK-aker Crisp was pledged to liberal financial legislation. Chairman V C Jones, ol the Kansas derr o:ratic committee; Lx-Gov. (Hick and other Kansas leaders have held a tecret conference anil, it is undcrstoo-l, decided to hold the del egate convention early and have the delegates to Chicago instructed to vote as a unit for Cleveland as an offset to the Hill cnr.vcn'.ion in New Voik. A dispatch from New York under date of March jth says: The old contest between the first mort gage hondhojdeis of the Oregon Pacific, and its former president,'!' Egenton Hogg, now receiver of the company, has been reneweJ. The bondholders met today and received a report from the reorgani zation committee. After a prolonged dis cussion it was resolved the committee should prepare a new plan providing for the purchase of property for the benetit of the assenting bondholders, and sliou.u have full power to take all action neces sary for their protection 1 he farmers Loan and Trust Company, trustee of the mortgage, Is alto instiucted to take pro ceedings in the Oregon ourt6 to set aside all the recent sale. Senator Carlisle whose fidelity to the principles cf the democratic party is with out question and whose insight Into things political is surpassed by no democrat in the country, says: 'In mv opinion the continued agitation of the silver question in tills congress is not only useless, but verv unwise, kvery body appears to admit that no free-coinage bill can become a law, because if passed by both houses it would be vetoed by the president an J there the matter would end. "Practically, therefore, there is nothing whatever to be accomplished by the agi tation, except to engender divisions and dissensions among those who are substan tially united upon all other economic and political questions. "Our true policy, it seems to me. Is to secure as tar as possible economv in public expenditures, make a eletr and empnatic record in tavor ot the reduction of taxation upon all the necessaries of life, urge the repeal of all subsidies and bounties to lavorco interests ana aujourn ay tue earliest possible day. "Upon all the questions which rea'ly divide the democratic and republican parties a large majority of the people will support us, and if we can confine the ap proaching contest to those questions alone the victory Is already won."
