He sccnis, if wc understand him. to concede that the tariff system is a robliery system, lie says lie endorses the reduction of the tariff, that lie in opposed to high protection, all of which is democratic. Hut we are uiKihle to see why any democrat, for n moment, khould talk about claiming that any part of he favors of a protective tariff should lie distributed among producers or any body else. Can it be possible that any democrat could claim a part of the spoil resulting from a system which he himself admits to boa robber system V We think not. We know Mr Newman too well to suppose that he means this, and yet his liintruiii.'o seems to admit of no other construction. This thing of a low tariff man or n tariff for revenue only man, being willing to have the wounds which he has ret eivjd by the en forcement of the roblier tariff scheme mol lified by being made a recipitent of a part of the spoils is unique. No. let us com mence at the right end of the tariff scheme to miuimiz?, if we cannot do away with its evils. Let us not attempt to even up the scheme by making other classes of citizens iU beneficiaries. If it is a robber scheme let us not only refuse to extend its benefi ciaries, but, on the contrary, let us dig up the evil and destroy it. To extend the evij is to enlarge it and render it far more dif ficult of remedy. To extend it would be acting on the saino principle that the peo ple of Multnomah county seem to bo gov erned by in regard to assessments. They claim that as real estate is not assessed at its full value, their mortgages should not be. hence they assess them at 50 centss on the dollar. Iiut to thus assess them is an open notoriona violation of the law. So to ex tend the beneficiary spoils of a roblier sys tem to a greater number of people is simply making this invasion of the rights of the people a more grievous one. The fact that the tariff war has been a long one, without satisfactory results, is no reason why we hould surrender. No sir, let us take cour age. The battle is practically won if the democrats will hold fast to the vantage ground gained in the last live yeurs and inarch forward in solid phalanx as in the days of yore against the vulnerable points in the walls of the fortress that now protects the enemies of tariff reform.
