Eu rope has HI, 000 miles, or 30,000 less than the Cnited States alone; Asia, 20.000; South America, 16.000; Australasia. 13.000, and Africa, 6000 miles. A striking feature of our own railway development is its wonderful rapidity. When the rebellion broke out in 1861 the total railway mileage of the country was 32,000 miles. In thirty years it has grown to 171,00i) miles. Another striking feature is the railway development in new states. South Dakota, only admitted as a state November 3, 18S9, has 2.605 miles, or more than either Florida, South Carolina, Miss issippi or Arkansas, and North Dakota, ad mitted at the same time, miles, or more than either New Jersey, Massachu- tetU, Louisiana or West Virginia. Little Rhode Island is lowest on the list with 22 miles, and peach-growing Delaware comes next with 315 miles. Tha boundless west has distanced the east and south in railway building. Illinois s tands first witn 10,2:15 miles, and while it is true that Pennsylvania stands second with 8,978, Kansas with 8,901, Texas with 8, 85-1, Iowa with 8,444 and Ohio with 8.152 miles, all lead New York, which is credited with only 7.920. Of the southern states Missouri stands first with 6.188 miles Georgia second with'4,82S, Alabama thirdt with 3,601, Virginia fourth with 3,556, North Carolina fifth with 3,244, while Kentucky and Tennessee follow close with 2,976 and 2.971 respectively. California leads the Facific states with 4.44 miles, and Massachusetts the Eastum States with 2,103. New Mexico stands first among the territories with 1.405 miles, Utah second with 1.347 and Indian Territory third with 1.270. Ultimas AMI ITLVEKTS There is no one thing that farmers need just at present more than good roads and bridges. The subject of good roads has beeiviuite p'nerally discussed by the newt- papers of the state, but there is a matter apparently small in itself, but really of much interest to the people, especially those who live in a level plain prairie like much of Linn County. The complaint conies from many sections of the county and is divined of so much importance that tlio attention of road supervisors and the county court is particularly directed to the matter. We refer to the manner of constructing small bridges and culverts. It is said that most generally these culverts are made with such a narrow drainage that when the waters get high, as sometimes happens in Oregon, there is not sullicient space under these bridges and culverts to pass all the water and the result is a channel is washed around the bridge and cut through the road, A gentleman who claims to be conversant with the facts says that it all comes from the illibcnility of the county court in not allowing supervisors sullicient luiulier with which to construct these culverts and bridges.
