The following is an extract from a peech made by Mr Cleveland on Jackwm Pay In New York City, It is worthy a most caiefut perusal: "Mr President and Gentlemen: No one can question the propriety of the celebra tion of this day by the organization whose invitation has called us together. The democratic zest and enthusiasm of the cel ebration of the day grows out of the fac! that the battle of New Orleans was won under the generalship of Andiew Jackson. It Is well that there are occasions like this where we may manifest that love and af fection for Andrew Jackson which have a place in every demo:ratic heart. It is"useless to attempt an explanation of this love and affection; they are demo cratic instincts. So strong is our conviction that Jackson's democracy derived its strength and vigor from the steadfast courage, the honesty of purpose and the sturdy persistency which characterized the man, that we willingly profess the belief that the same conditions are essential to the usefulness and success of the democratic party In these latter days. Thus, wherever party principle or policy may lead us, we have constantly before us an unquestioned example of the spirit in w'-ich our work should be undertaken. The democratic party has lately declared to the people that if it were trusted and in vested with power, their burdens of taxa tion should be lightened, and that a better and more just distribution of benefits should be assuiedto them. There is no doubt that we have received their trust and confidence on the faith of our promises. We, who are proud to call ourselves Jacksonlan democrats have boldly and aggresively attacked a political heresy, op posed to the best Interests of the people and defended by an arrogant and unscru pulous party. The fight Is still on. We should be steadfast to the issue e have raised until it Is settled, and rightly settled. The steadfastness we need will not permit a premature and distracting search for other and perplexing questions, nor will it allow us to be tempted or driven by the enemy into new and tangled paths. We have given pledges to the people and they have trusted us. The service we un dertook was not to advise those waiting for better days that their cause w;.s hope less, or under any pretext to sugge-t a cessation of efforts. Our engagement was tc labor incessantly, bravely and stub -born'.y, seeing nothing ar.d considering nothing but ultimate success. These pledges and promises should be faithfully and honestly ktpt. Party faith lessness is party dishonor. I hope, then, I mav venture to state in this assembly that, even if there had been but slight en couragement for the cause we have es poused, there would be no justification for timidity and faint-heartedness. With the success we have already achieved.amount Ing to a political revolution, it seems to me tha: it would be the height of folly, con sidered purely as a question of party man agement, to relax in the least our determi nation and persistency. If we suspect anywhere In our counsels compromising hesitation, or a disposition to divert the uni'.v of party efforts, let us be watchful. The least retreat bodes dis aster. Cowardice is often called conserv atism, and an army scattered into sections invites defeat. I believe our countrymen are prepared to act on principle are in no mood for political maneuvering. They demand a plain and simple statement of poluical purposes. It seems to me that if we can knock these two interests out cf the list of those so blest by high tariff taxes that it leaves high protection about in the same condition as the soldier's old muske' that was so well worn that there was noth ing left but the touch hole. The Mountaineer in a spirit of great des pondency, asks: "Shall we give up growing wool ?" Well, we are really afraid we will, if we permit McKinley or any of his coa T jutors to make another increase of the duty on that article, and a still greater increase relatively on woolen goods. Since McKin ley ' bill went into operation wool has sold at from 2 to 4 cents less on the pc und. That's one fact we would have the STountaiuta puzzle its partisan mentality on. Another fact is that since that bill has been in oper ation there has been an increase in the im portation of wool to the amount of over thirty million pounds and a decrease in the amount of woolen goods of overS-.r. 000.000. If the Mountaineer will study these facts with that degree of intelligence and non partisan feeling necessary to arrive at a cor rect conclusion it will repeat its question with a doubly increased emphasis. But it knocks its tariff views into smithereens, all the same.
