If there were in republican organs a sense of the fi'ness of things less would now be heard ol the Tammany bogy w ith which it has been accustomed to terrify rural members ol the party of high times. Last year the re publicans of New York appreciated the J? -. rerate nature of the politlcnl situation. Tli understood the signs of the times, and real ized that not eren their disgraceful gerryman der of the state would save them in the ccn test which impended. In the rural districts the defections from the party were appalling to the stoutest republicans. When eren Franklin and Essex ccunties promised to de feat republicans there was little hope for the more equally divided districts, To meet the difficulty the old-time leaders bethought themselves of the Tammany cry, and selected as their candidate for governor youth with abundant impudence but not bur dened with sense - Into his mouth were put platitudes prepared by the most notorious of the survivors of the Tweed regime. At once there was unity of action on the part of the republican press In every state. If Fassett, the dudish candidate of New York republican ism, could humbug the voters of that state with pretense of political purity, there ould be made an Issue on which the old gang migh retain their power. On every side was announced that the people were tired of Tammany rule. "Some of the unca guid of the metropolis had joined in the cry against the democracy bemuse their advice had not been followed as to the platform of the party, and had declared themselves favorable to the victory of the Piatt gang. This was put forth as proof that the people were with the Piatt combine. A few noisy mouthers were held up as specimens of respectability. But when the votes were counted it was clear that the people of New York state had not been deceived in the issns. Thev had memories inclusive of the Plitt and Tammany records. Thongh it is not denied that men of little.scrupie hare sought at times to use the powerful democratic organization of New York city, still it had been noted by an ob servant people that the most potent heads ol the organization had been laid low when con victed of wrong doing. This had not been the case with a political machine whose worst diameters had received the continued support of TJa'tism. If republcan organs will look over the lesson of the late New York cam paign they will save themselves from deserved ridicule by avoiding further reference to the people's distrust of Tammany. That is a democratic organization as far above the New York republican political machine as the heavens above the earth. This has been the popular verdict by an electorate best able to form a discriminating opinion. Every since Ex-governor David Bennett Hiil was elected to the United States Senate, seme e;ght or ten months ago, the republi can leaders have been clamoring that he should ri-sign the governorship. But the governor with his characteristic courage kept his hand on the helm of state until he turns it over to his successor with his party in full control of all departments of the state. Now, then, thes same leiders are objecting to his taking the senatoiship which they have been insist ing so long that he s'.iould take. Verily, I) B H is a brick. He will be a thorn in the side of some senators in Washington thst will con tinually worry them. The legislature of New York was con vened and organized Tuesday. The senate elected the officers chosen by the demo cratic caucus, Edwards, independent voted with the democrats. No efforts at obstructionjwere made by the republicans, Walker, democrat, for the 7th senatorial district was seated. The senate stands 17 democrats, 14 republicans and one inde pendent republican who votes with the democrats. The democrats have six ma jority in the nuuse. One of the most im portant duties which the legislature will be called upon to perform will be the taking of a census of the state and a re districting of the state into congressional, senatorial and legislative distrcts. It is to be hoped that the democrats will make an apportionment that will be fair and equj table to all parts ol the state and one that will fairly represent the voice of the peo pie of the state. Belore Secretary Blaine can reasonably expect Chili to do equity he must himself perforin equity. He must recall Pat Egan, our alien minister, whose misman agement has been the chief cause ol the strained relations between the two coun tries. The Harrison organs which are con gratulating the president for appointing only one Indian man circuit judge do not consider the tact that the one he did ap point is as Indecent as a dozen ordinary Indian republicans. From a republican standpoint this bounty system is a redeeming trait In the McKinley bill. Of course this man is wealthy or he cuuld not carry on such a busings. AllUe peo ple are taxed for the benefit of this wealthy one. This class leglilation is the lurking, poisonous foe thit U gradually undermin ing the very fundamental principles ol free government. Tariff reform makes constant gains among the present descendants of the Pil grims. Hence the appositeness ol Mr Cleveland's Insistence among his fellows, upon "the thought that our government cannot, without perversion, hold cut une qual rewardt and encourage selfish de signs."
