The commissioner of Internal revenue hat prepared a statement of the probable production of lugar timing the current fiscal year, of which the following la a eummary : Number of producers of sugai from cane, 730; from beets, 7, from sorg hum, 3; from maple ap, 3113s; total 4673, The estimated amount of sugar pio duced: Cane sugar, 500,000,000 pounds beet sugar, 19,110,000 poundi; sorghum a, 500,000 pounds; maple sugar, 8,000,000 pounds; total, 539,710,001) founds. Es timated bounty: Cane fugar, $10,350,1100 beet sugar, $584,100; sorghum sugar, $50,- 000; maple sugar, $150,000; total, $ii,- 1 34,000, The production pf sugar from beets, so far as the issue of license it con cerned, is mostly confined to California, Nebraska, Utah, and Virginia, There are three producers in California, with an es tlmated production, from 6000 acres, of 16,000,000 pounds, half of which is attrib uted to the Western Beet Sugar company, of San Francisco, whose factory is lcca'ed at Watsonville, Santa Cruz county. The Virginia production is estimated at 10, 000 pounds. The estimated production of sugar from sorghum Is divided between Kansas, with a production from 4,034 acres, of 1,500,000 pounds, and Missouri, with twenty-six acres, producing 10,000 pounds. Since April, to May 31st, there have been Imported free of duty, under the, new tariff, 1,169,158 pounds of beet sugar and 731,504 pounds of cane and other kinds. One of the most significant statesments, (and one that ought to damn those who fastened the bounty scheme upon the country,) is the one that there are 4671 , producers of sugar in this country to whom the government will give as a bounty the enormous sum of $11,134,000. Think of it, ye farmers and laborers, The people taxed to the extent of $11,134,000 to en courage 4671 producers In the manufact ure of sugar. This is the very quintes sence of McKinlevlsm, No wonder that ism is daily becoming odious. A CONSCIENTIOUS (?) HAN. The hypocrisy of some men stands out In bolder relief than tie sham honesty of Wanamaker. Just read what Clarkson one of the members of the national re publican committee says about Quay the chairman of that committee: Immediately after the election Quay stated to his colleagues of the executive committee that he desired to resign as chairman ; that he did not desire to do the detail work, and still more, that a United States senator ought not to be chairman of the national committee or any political committee, tils colleagues resisted this and persuaded him not to resign. He re newed his wish three or four months af terward and about the time of the inau guration insisted upon it. The judgment of the committee was opposed to it. The senator was only changed from his pur poses by the advice and appeal of his col league. His health was frail at times and he desired to be rid of the burden. His health finally failed while he was in the enate and he went on an annual fishing tour. He stated to me tnen his unaltered determination to resign. Just think of the amount of mock mod esty Quay must have to be led to say that a United States senator ought not to be chairman of the national committee or any political committee. It Is safe to say that if all senators were as thoroughly unscru ious and dishonest as he, then Indeed none of them should have charge of any politi cal committee. Its all sham. Quay never intended to resign unless compelled to ba ttle remaining decent portion of his own party. OPPOSES CLEVELAND. That sterling democratic paper, the New York Sun, still keeps up its opposition to Cleveland, and will not be placated. Should the ex-president be Dominated by the demo crats next year, the covert, if noi pronounced opposition of the Sun may be expected, and that would count much in a closely contested state, as New York promises to be. The Sun is the representative of the taiiff branch 01 the democracy, and cannot sianu Cleve land's free trade notions Salem SMeumia. The above is a sample specimen of "wash'1 to be found now and then in every republican paper in the country. The Sactwan knows just as well as any one that the S'im is not a democratic paper at all: That it has not sup- ported a democratic candidate for president for t'.ie lust twelve years; that it opposed Hancock, and Cleveland tot'., times. The a65jan,with equal purpose to misrepresent, say the Sua is the representative of the tariff branch of the democracy. There is no e uch branch. All democrats . are tariff reformers. This fact more thin others is breaking down the wall of protectionism, and especially is this so among the wool growers of Ohio where the father of McKin lcyiira is the "protection" candidate for gov ernor. Has it ever entered the minds of wool growers and farmers that somehow this Mc Kinley scheme af.er all seems to have been made for the munfjeture- and not for the pro ducer? This is seen in the fact, that, while more wool is being imported since, than be fore the pissage of the McKinley bill, during the first seven months after its passage, the importation of manufactured woolens fell off more than $8,000,000, thus showing that after all the manufacturer gets the benefit and the wool grower pays the bill in reduced prices for wool. The absorptive power of peat Is finding for it other uses than its old.one as a cheap fuel. French surgeons use peat-powder, treated with antiseptics, as a dressing for wounds, and have obtained excellent re sults. Efforts have been made also to weave it into fabrics, and to use foi stuff ing mattresses, etc. Ex-president Cleveland, It Is said, has promised Governor Campbell of Ohio that he will make six speeches Ir. the pending campaign In that state.
