glailtj democrat KNIUlITSOFIi VBOK VS REPUBLICANS, A dispatch from Philadelphia says: General Maitei Workman Powderly, of the Knights of Labor, tonight made public lengthy statement regarding the controversy over the empleymeat of plate piinters, lie begins with the assertion that the itatementi credited to secretary Foster are entirety and unqualifiedly false. The secretary has stated that the matter was not subject of discussion at Mansfield between Senator Sherman, Major McKinley and himself. Towderly asserts the matter was discussed at Mansfield, and that settlement was advised. Towderly holds proof of this over McKinleys signature. June 30 Secretary Foster concluded an argument with Messrs Devlin & Cavanagh to restore the dis charged men, and even went so far as to write a letter to one of them, embodying the agree ment. That letter, Powderly says, he holds According to Devlin's memoranda, the terms were: That the seven men dropped from the rolls in the plate printing department shall be re stored to their farmer places, or places of eriual importance and pay, and shall be treated who inc same mimes, ami cuuftiucruiiuu a the other plate printers by the chief and assist ants In the bureaus. That four of them shall be restored witLin ten days, and the others within two weeks from date. Just as the knights were congratulating them selves upon the happy termination of the trouble, a committee .of plate printers was called in by Meredith, The card which pre ceded them said: "A delegation from the Gompers federation of labor desires to be heard before an agree ment is arrived at with the Knights ot Later Continuing, Powderly in his statement sars These men have been drilled by Meredith as to their speech and conduct while deliber ating with the secretary, but Meredith forgot to tell them the name of the organization t'tiey were 6npposed to repiesent, and gave the name of an association that does not exist. Alter a short interview with this committee the secretary turned to Devlin and said, 'If there is to be a fight with this organization or yours I dont know Dut I had better fight yours, Devlin retorted that the Knights of Labor could do some fighting themselves, and called Secretary Fosteis attention to the fact he had concluded an agreement, but Foster said he would have to send for Gompers before he could arrive at a further understanding of the case, The advices of Secretary Foster have influenced him to so act as to give the contro versy such a coloring as to create the impress- iou that it Is a struggle between the labor organizations. Such is not the case. Foster has an undoubted rit;ht to consult with Gom pers if he pleases, but the fact still remains that none of the men involved belong to any organization but the Knights of Labor, "SOUK MCKINLEY PRICES." The Ortgrian under the above caption recites that one assistant Secretary Bus- scy, (whoever he Is,) Informs the public that bid 1 for contracts tor furnishing goods and supplies for the Indians are put at lower figures than they were before the pa-sage of the McKinley bill, and urges this fact to show that prices have not ad vanced since the passage of that bill . The Oregomun cites the fact that eight pound pair of blankets re now offered for $3,31 that cost $3.36 a year ago. Now, does that paper for a single moment pretend to say that this follows as a result of the passage ol the McKinley bill? Let us see. The duty on the eight pound pair of blankets before the passage of the McKinley bill was $2.60. McKinley raised the duty on the same blankets from $.6o to $3.So, The placing of such a duty would natur ally limit the supply of blankets in this country, and limiting the supply of an ar ticle ordinarily Increases the price, "ence the difference In the price at which these blankets are now offered compared with the price of a year ago Is attributable either to the fact that the manufacturer obtained his wool cheaper since than before the passage of the McKinley bill or that he has reduced the wages of his employes and can thus sell cheaper. The O'coni an can chrose either horn of the dilemma. To attribute the increase In the price of of flour, pork and beef to the McKinley bill Is the unabashed act of the demagogue. It Is too thin. The farmer can be no longer deceived by such nonsense. Occasionally he imagines that he is going to have an attack of illness, but that is a weakness he has had for many years. Time and time again has this home market theory been shown to be a humbug. "Home market for farm pro ducts" has been the shibboleth of repub llcan protectionists for years So far as the home market for wheat, corn, oats, beef and pork, which constitute the main surplus In farm products, are concerned our farmers now and ' have always controlled this market and have always had a large surplus to tend to foreign markets. We are continually told that the home mat ket is better than a foreign. This is true only when our farmers do not have more than enough tn supply the home de mand. When they have a surplus above the amount necessary to supply the home demand, the foreign demand or market is a God-send, a better market always than the home market would be without the foreign market. Does not the Vwsknow that the price of wheat In the home mar ket Is. always regulated by the market of Liverpool? A speculator buvlng v.heat to supply the home market will not ordi narily pay any more than he who buys to supply the foreign market.
