. ... L A THOl'SANI) MILLIONS. The expenditures of the last congress aggre gate over one thousand millions of dollars. Not only haj the treasury surplus been scatter e3, but with increased taxes on most of the necessaries of business and of life, and with a forced loan of over fifty millions from a sacred trust for the redemption of bank notes, the treasury is now certain to present a deficit of from fifty to eighty millions at the close of the coming fiscal year, Whsn it is considered that the cpenditu-e, of the last congress exceed the entire expendi tures of the fir6t half century of.the government including the cost of of the second war with Knghnd, and that the entire expenditures of the nation when Mr Lincoln became president did not exceed sixty millions a year, or one bundled and twenty millions by each congress, the full measure of the bewildering profligacy of the last congress may be appreciated' Think of a single congress at the close of a century of free government expending more than the entire public expenditure during the first half of the century, including the excep tional cost of a protracted war iih Englandi But the last congress was not content with the expenditure of a thousand millions. In adcition to that appalling wulc of public money, it loaded the nation with another thous and millions of debt that must be paid in shape of future pensions, subsidies, bounties, etc. The true record of the last congress is, there fore, one thousand millions actnally appropri ated for immediate expenditure and another thousand millions of debt loaded upon future coagresses in addition to the legitimate expen ses of the government. The first republican congress under president Lincoln had little over one hundred miliions of revenue exclusive of loans or to be precise( the revenue was $41,476,299 in 1S61 and $51 919.261 in 1S62 and the entire expenditure of l$6l, the first year of Lincoln's presidency including interest on public debt, was, In exact figures$66,65o,2i3. The last republican con gress, in lime of peace, has expended over one thousand millions and added a thousand millions more to the ordinary expenditures of the future. With such a record of jobbing and profligacy, it would seem reasonable to assume that the nation ka. had the last repub lican congress of our history. Philadelphia Timet. Few people can fi rm a definite idea of what is involved in the expression: "An inch of rain, It may aid such to follow this curious calcula tion: An acre is equal to 6,272,640 square in ches; an Inch deep of water on this area be as many cubic Inches of water, which, at 227 to the gallon, is 22,000 gallons. The new tariff went Into operation on April 1st, It was a bright day here. We got up early to look for "disasters dire"an(J 'horrora innumerable," but were disap pointed. The morning looked just like yesterday, only not quite to cold. It was colder for McKinley last fall. It was a good day for gardening but we could see no politics in it. Grant's Pass Courier Here Is an effort to defend "protection Ism" as expounded by McKinley. It is not 6trange that every such effort should be founded on a fallacy or false assumption of some kind. Tne truth is that the new tariff went into effect the 6th day of last October followed by a remarkably cold wave In November. THE WORLD'S POPULATION. Few are aware of the vast number of people that can be placed on a small tract of ground. Vhen we speak of millions of men we are apt to picture to ourselves an almost boundless mass of humanity; yet a million of people, standing closely togoth er, each not occupying more than four square feet, could be placed on a patch but little more than a third of a mile square. A square mile will accommodate 7,965,000. At that rate the whole population of the United States would hardly cover three miles square, and the whole population of the world, could stand on two townships! Edwaids, one of the murderers of the Fredericksen family at Sealand, Wash., Is certainly a villain of the deepest dye. lie Is said to be an Odd Fellow, and high in standing as a Mason, having served as a deligate to various conventions, though this did not help him at hfo trial, as there were four Odd Fellows and three Masons among the jurors who convicted him, and some of the witnesses against him were Masons. This statement, if corrrcct, gives the lie to those who assert positively that Masonry protect murderers, ZTjc. The republican journals are face to f.cc with a divided duty. If they attempt to show that the McKinley tariff has ad vanced prices, and so 'protected" Ameri can manufacturers, the consumers are up in arms. If, on tne contrary, they sho.v ihut prices are lower than before the pas sage of the act, the manufacturers will in sist they have been "taken in and done for,' and may here after rUuse to furnish the sinews of war.
