Satin gtemorcai ! The ciii w funi.ds....., l.e.blain's column i at Hie time of the adoption of the constitution IN COSTKOl. The democracy is In control in Massa chusetts, and younjr men are In control ol the demccratic party of that state. The sceptre has departed into new hands and new Ideas and new men are guiding In the old commonwealth. It Is a remarkable storv. A dozen young men, some of republican and some of democratic antecedents, met in a little room on State street in the fall of 18SS, They were, most of them, young men of wealth, or collegiate training and of high social position. They formed a "Ycung Men's Demociatlc Club" and began a cru sade In behalf of "free raw material" and "a freer trade." The club grew rapidly. The social pos llion of its founders helped to make it pop ular. The work it was doing showed courage and unselfishness and young men all over the state hastened to join It. For two years this work went on, and then came the election of 1S90, and members of the club from every portion of the slate were elected to high official position. William E Russell, one of the founders (if the club, is at thirty -four years of age the governor of the state. John C Crosby, the first president of the club, is at thirty one congressman-elect from the Twelfth or Berkshire district. Sherman Hoar, a nephew of Senator Hoar, of Force bill fame, Is at thirty congressman-elect from the Fifth or Gen. Bank's ol,l distri;t Oeorge Fred. William is at thirty si congressman-elect from the Ninth district. Nathan Mathews, another of the founders of the club, is at thirty-six the Mayor of Boston. Harvey H Pratt is at thirty the District-Attorney for the Southeastern district. Josiah Qulncy Is at thirty-four the secretary of the democratic state com mittee and the leader of his party on the floor of the house of representatives. The democrats have nlnetv-elght members the lower haiise of the legislature, and tin average of their ages Is less than thirty five. It has been a young tren's move ment throughout. There has been nolh. Ing like It .before in Massachusetts and there Is nothing like It to-day In any othe state In the union. Every one concedes that the work of these young men carried Massachusetts lor the democracy. It Is a cheering prospect, for the triumph of the young democracy of Massachusetts was a triumph of Ideas It was a vindica tion of all that Is best In American citizen shipit was a proof of the superiority of principle over venality In political affairs, m '775 wereonlj what would now berounted I towns of moderate size. Tli. 'WAT Major C Boyd Barrett, formerly of Leesburg, Va., but for the past eight years a resident of Aberdeen, S. D., and editor of the Republican, of that city, was in Washington last week. In speaking of the election of James A Kyle to the senate to a Washington Post reporter he said thtt it was a c.ise of the office seeking the man, not the man seeking the office. Senator- elect Kyle Is a man of more than ordinary aoiuty, and win make an able represcnta tlve. Ilis first appearance in politics was on last Fourth of July, He made a speech at Aberdeen on that day which attracted wide attention among the farmers for th position ne took on the tariff and silver questions. lie was shortly afterwards nominated as the farmers' alliance candl aate ror state senate, and after a hot fight was elected by a narrow majority. Sena tor Kyle was formerly a democrat, and his sympathies natural';- lie In that direct Ion, though earlier in life he was a repub lican, and Mr Barrett believes that his election is the entering wedge toward placing the state In the democratic column In 1S92. The first passenger cars for this country were merely stage coaches on the rail, and in other countries they still keep something of this form. In America large, airy cars for passengers were early introduced, and the parlor car, the sleeping car, the hotel car and the dining car are all of American origin, and are little used elsewhere. The street tramway, or horse railroad, and the elevated railways for rapid travel in cities, were first used in this country. Secretary Foster's Ideas of finance will be strictly political, and party politics have not as vet taken definite shape In regard to the silver question. Consequently he will probably set his trap so as to "ketch the coon either a-goin' or a comin'." ; . t .-l..j The indications now are that General Palmer will he elected senator In Illinois.
