4WtfeMS&k I..!; 'i r . ! . FLOCXIMa TO THE CITIES, One ol s'.rlilnj feature of. the In crease. In population during the lat decade It that It U nearly all In the cities. The per. centage ol Increase for the whole country is 44.86 per nt, but the percentage of Increase In the towns and cities Is a long way above the average, while In the coun try district!, especially In the older states, there has been In zr.tny localities an actual decline In population. The growth In city population Is quite as marked 'n llie 'mailer is in the larger titles, Twenty-eight cities are shewn to posses a population above 1 00,000 a gain of eight In ten years. Of the largest cities Chicago shows the greatest poportionate gain 119 per cent but this Is partly a re ult of consolidation. Of the older cities Brooklyn's gain Is 43 percent; Buffalo 62, Cleveland, 63; l'lttsburg, 5a i Washington, 55; Detroit, 76; and Milwaukee, 77; per cent. The eight towns that have been added to the 100,000 list since 1SS0 Minneapolis, Omaha, Rochester, St Paul, Kansas City, Indianapolis, Denver and Allegheny have made astonishing strides. Omaha, which leads in increase, gained 360 per cent. Minneapolis gained 256 per cent; St Paul, 234; Denver, 203, and Kansas City, 140. This tendency to drift to the towna Is shown quite as strikingly in old states like New Hampshire as anywhere. The total increase of population in that state for the decade Is 29,539.0; 3-5' Per cent The in crease In the twelve cities and tow ns in the state with over .1,000 inhabitants is 29,- 455, or within 84 ol the whole increase in the state. The state has ten counties, in three of which, Carroll, Grafton and Sul livan, there was a small decrease. It has 249 cities, towns and grants, 14S of the smaller of which show a decrease. As the twelve cities and towns of over 4,000 ac count for almost the entire Increase In the state, the other 89, which are chiefly those containing the largest population below 4,000, make up the losses shown in the 149. A similar state of things is shown In Maine, Vermont and some sections of New York ar.d even of Pennsylvania. It is useless to decry this tendency of population to the towns until something lb doae to make it more profitable to live in the country. In spite of the small increase of country population during the decade, the farmers have been less prosperous than usual. They were able to feed the in creased city population and still had so great a surplus of food products as to be compelled to sell at a constantly declining price for many of their staples. Unless tome change is brought about in this re spect the tendency of population toward the cities has not reached Its limit yet. SIX CONGRESSMEN. It seems that according to the new cen. sus, Philadelphia will be entitled to six congressmen under the new apportion ment, and the city is to be s arranged that the republicans can elect all of them, while the 100,000 democrats who live In that city will be disfranchised. But they are whites. If South Carolina would dis franchise that number of negroes a federal election bill would be put on the boards at once; but nothing will attract 'the atten tion of republican congressmen when the rights and liberties of white men only are put In jeopardy. During the life-time of congressman Randall the city was always arwarded a district for him, becanse he was a tariff advocate and voted with the republicans on that question. Now the democrats will be unrepresented In con gress. Clearfield (Pa.) Rcjublican. Under the new Australian ballot law passed by the legislature, voting precincts must not contain to exceed 250 voters. This will make it necessary to reduce the size of the following precincts in Lion county: Albany, Harrisburg, Brownsville, East Albany, H'est Albany and Lebanon. Scio cast 250 votes for congress at the last election and its boundaries will probably have to be changed. The changes will be made by ere. ating new precincts or attaching portions of the larger ones to adjoining smaller ones. A dispatch from Spartenjuig S C says W Zimmerman store-keeper and agent of the farmers' alliance supply .store in thlr city, Is said to be short in his accounts from $15,000 to $30,000. The Democrat hopes to see the Portland consolidation bill piss and become a law- It would make a grand old city of Portland, the pride of the state, ALBANY :OR. Much curiosity has been expressed dur ing the Inst few months as to whether the democrats of Washington were for Hill or for Cleveland. There was a good deal of tklk about the last state convention having been to Hill's Interest. The question of how the democrats of Washington stand has Increased In interest, since another presidential election Isnpproachlng. Representative Frame, of Snohomish, has taken the trouble to poll the democrat ic members of the legislature. He has found that there are 16 for Cleveland, two for governor Hill and two for Robt, Pattl son Wall Walla Statesman.
