lature on the ballot in the aepvrate houses
today, he failed o carry the senate, and
there was no election. This surprises no
one, as it was seen he did nut have a ma
jority. The ballot resulted: Squire, sen
ate 15, house 43; total 58 Calkins, sen
ate 14, house 15; total 29. Carroll, senate
4, house 17; total 21. Edward EldHdge,
house 1; total 1. Charles E Laughton,

cattt 111. There is no doubt but Senator

Villiam M EvarU. Upon the coll of the
house, David U Hill received 65 and William
tu ivans 5a votes, wun nve absentees, in
she senate the president announced that the
tenate would proceed lo ballot for United
States senator in place of William M Evarta.
Every senator was in his seat and the ballot
showed 19 votes for Evartj and 13 for David
11 Hill for United S'ntes senator.

ent congress. A personal contest came very
