' Rich Finds of Borax. When Hon A H Crook, representative from Curry :ounty, came to Salem the other day he brought with him a large nugget, and a very beautiful sample, too, of the borax now being mined in the vicinity of Ellens burc. This borax, or. more properly speaking, borate of lime, is found In pay ing quantities about fifteen miles south of Ellensbuig. It comes in pockets and the nuggets found weigh fro n a few pounds to a half ton. '1 he property on which this borax Is found belongs to San Francisco liparties and they are developing It, working Jfrom twentv-five to forty men all the time. Last year they shipped 400 tons of borax, sending it to San Francisco, where it finds ready sale at nine cents per pounu. An alteracatlon at Spiingfield Sunday morning between Will Pengra and Mulligan, the town marshal, came near aesulting In the death of Pen gra. The facts, ad we learn them, are that Sunday morning Pengra turned out his horses to go to water. Mulligan took them up and put them In tie pound. Pengra found them there 60on afterwards and was going to turn them loose when Mulligan h.tertered. incy got 10 dis puting over the law in regard to the case and went over to the recorder's ollice to look it up. While there they got into a warm dispute and Mulligan seized a to bacco cutter, weighing about eight or ten pounds, and struck Pengra on the top of the head, cutting a gash about four Inches long and half an inch deep. Pengra was unconsciou& for sometime and was in a critical condition, but lias recovered so as to be around. Had the gash been much deeper It would have resulted fatally. No ariests followed.
