for support in jails, prisons and alms
houses, nnd in every regard manifests
potentially above that of man."
The editor of the New York Indepen
dent has interviewed, by letter, seventy
railroad superintendents, who testify,
almost without exception, that total ill)

is also prohibited among the men while
on duty by some ot the companies.

last letter to the I'nioii Signal, makes a
most earnest plea for signatures to the
world's petition. She writes as follows:
"There ought to lie a million, nay, five
million, signatures in the United States.
There were, some years ago, six millions
of women in the Christian church in the
Vnited States. Why not, then, at least
live million signatures?
"I know you are busy. I know what
it is to snatch an hour from a day crowd
ed full of home duties, to do a bit of
temperance work. I know w hat it is to
lie obliged to neglect some things of im
portance to accomplish something of
greater moment. As in the sight of tiod
lask you to tako up this work at once,
and do it thoroughly, that the result will
be all that wo hope. And now I shall
not speak or w rite of it more to my
American sisters."
