THE DAILY DEMOCRAT. CKOSS MlSKLi'UKSKN rATlON. Some time atjo the Ukmock.vt said : McKinK'v's bill 10 make suijar free niul a hiiih tariff on tin shows to the whole world that this bill is as purely icrtioini! and partisan as u is possible to make it Men of reason an) intelligence every where are asking why sugar, which is produced in large quantities in this country, rduuiM not be protected, at least, equally with tin which is not produced here at all. 1 hese men renect that the protection or sttar in utts to the benefit of Southern planters t;A.V the duty on tin v.t'll inure to the benefit of a J manufacturers tit ennsvZ'ania wuo were squeezing in their "fat" In order to elect Harrison, and herein i the motive, spiiit and animus of the McKinley bill. The Roseburg Plaindcahr copies the above and then says : The Dhmocrat, thouuh it cxprosj.lv stated, a short time since when aked the question, that it was in favor of 4fre; sugar and free evervlhini: else, whet her ot south ern or northern production," now declarer that men of "reason and intelheiKe are erery where asking hy sugar should not be protected." Why the Plaindczlcr should stray so far from the truth as it does in the above. Is, to us, wholly inexplicable. The Demo crat never has said that it was in favor of "free sugar and free everything else, whether of Southern or Northern pro duction.' This is a very gross misrepre sentation made by the Piaindcaler without the shadow ef excuse, except, that In the absence of anything legitimate, it was compelled to resort to this species of n i representation in order to ward off the sledge hammer blows which we have felt called upon to make upon Us robber tariff system. This kind of defense on the part of republican newspapers is run new. When driven to the wall tney resort to it. The Plaindealer again says that the Democrat says that "men ofjreason and intelligence are every where asking why sugar should not be protected." rt'e had always sup posed that species of falsehood was beneath the moral plain occupied by the Plaindeal r but it seems that we were in error. By looking again at the extract taken from the Democrat by the Plaindealer the reader will see just what we said : ''Men of rea son and intelligence every where are ask ing why sugar, zihict is produced tn large quantities in thi country should not be pro tected, at least equally v.ttlt tin which Is not produced here at alt.1 The words in italics are those which the P!a'tulcr (evidently with the design of making it appear that the Democrat said something which it never did say,);aw fit to leave out of the sentence as it appeared in the Democrat. Wc have a ri to ask. the Plaindealer to make amends for this scurvy treatment o' one who in no sense ever deserved it. The Plaindealcy undertakes to say that the Dem ocrat has heretofore held that "protect ion," so-called, did not "inure" to any one. On the contrary, the Democrat has al ways contended that it always inures to the benefit of the manufacturer and at the ex pense of the consumer, "Protection for protections sake is the tnsnumental fraud of our times. The simple fact!, proved an'l not denied, concerning Lemon's in dorsement of a note for Kaum on Jan 6th, and U sum's repaying the favor on Jan 7th by issu ing an official order enormoasly f.ivoring I .emon its a pension attorney, which order he li.i.l be fore declined to issue on the strength of hi? own deputy's showing tint its issuance would be uuju.it to other attorneys and their clients and fatally embarrassing to the business of the Bureau these facts alone not onlv justify 1 .t require a demand fur the Commissioner's im mediate retirement. But in some unexplained way Kaum seems Intrenched behind influence which prompts not only the Administration but the Sneaker ot the House to piotect him by all possible means. At every step the investigation of his conduct has been 'accompanied by scandalous efforts on the part of those who should be hfs judges, to balk the inquiry. When Mr Cooper moved the investigation the Speaker sought to prevent it by taking the ettraoidinary ground, in clect, that the facts which he investigation was meant to discover must be specified before inquiry could be order ed. When he made up . he Committee of In veitigation he refuwd to plac Mr Cooper, the mover of the resolution, upon it, a proceeding in the interest of the accused violative of a preceden. It nowappeais tint one of the mem. ber of the Pensions Committee whom he select ed to serve as a Kaum investigator wns him self Raum's partner in the transaction which was the chief subject of inquiry. The scandal of (his mm Smyscr appoint ment and service on the Committee was so Manifest that the moment the fact became known he was unanimously permitted to with draw, ard Speaker K':ed felt it necessary tc exculpate himself in the matter by a decolla tion to the House that he hid not known o' Snivel's paiticip-'tion in Kaum'i speculations ntil that hour.
