Second An increase of 50 to 100 per cent, on app!e, barley, b-ans, cabbages, cg. fruit, hay, hides, honey, hops, unions, potatoes, seeds, straw and tobacco; a double duty on lard, ham, mutton and me;a of all kinds, on milk, butter, cheese and dairy products, with a higher rate n wool, accompanied by a still higher tax on all manufacturers, of wcol. Third Raw sugar, free lift; rates on re fined retained, rice reduced. Fourth Morb tl an 100 per cent, in crease on tinplate. on sulphuric acid and phosphatic fertilizers, and a general in crease of tax on the whole line of manu facturers. Mr Crown wonders now any such a scheme of raising the tariff on farm pro ducts, of w hich we produce a great surplus, as an off-set to the enhanced cost of pro duction under a tariff which raises the , pi ice of all o'.her commodities, can impose on any intelligent farmer or any man out side of the asylum. Examining the mcst prominent items briefly he say : As to animals, on which the dutv is to be more than doubled with the avowed ob ject of shutting them out of the country, the result would be that we would simply have to pay more for breeding animals, which constitute the most important part of the importation . As to oats and barley, the effect, if any, would be merely in th: counties bordering on Canada. We did buy these 22,324 bushels of oats, but we sold 624,266 bushe and raised 6S,ooo times as many bushels as we bought. The barley we must have, as our brewers agree, in order to brew the best of beer, and so far as tbeer is necces sary at all, 90 far we must have the barley grown north of the lakes, as none can compete with it in quality. As to the higher tariff on wool w hich will undoubtedly be clapped on for a simi lar reason than that, on hides will b; re ected (there are supposed to be about a million voting shepards in the country.) it will make dearer hats, clothes, blankets and carpets for everybody. The rich will not feci this as much as the poor, a the rates on the fine woolens which they can afford are but two-thirds of those on the lower grade goods commonly worn; be sides, they can troop over to Europe every season, more than paving their traveling expenses by purchasing th-;lr wearing ap parel there. It may benefit the great sheep ranches of the southwest and the breeders of blood ed rams, but the utmost possible benefit to the farmer of the estt w ith ht little flock of twenty or thirty sheep, will be more than offset by the certainly Increased coft O' the fit st suit of clothes or bedroom car pi! that he buys. It will probably wind up most of the sur viving woolen faclorics,sixty-cight of them having failed in Pennsylvania alone in thirteen months; In which case it cannot but lower the price of wool by decreasing the number of buyers. As the home market :annot begin to use up what the farmer produces Mr Jircwn points out ihe absurdity of the argument that it needs a taiiff to choke off foreign competition. Evidently the farmers have been doing a heap of thinking and some of them arc getting ready to act. Cleveland Pl.tiiuftal'r.
