To clean carpets: When the earpot Is
well beaten and free from dust, lay it
lightly down and scrub it with soap dis-
solved in soft water mixed with bullock's
gall about four gallons of water to a pint

the carpet to their original brightness and

Chicago, April 20. The action of the two
rival conferences of the Evangelical church in
each appointing a pastor for every church in
tlie state resulted in a serious trouble at the
Humboldt l'ark church ia this city today.
Rev Mr Morlock was to preach his farewell
sermon and his successor was to be installed.
Tlie adherents and appointees from both con
ferences were on hand. Bishop Eslier's con
ference had appointed Rev John Vetler ami the
other faction, Rev A Hcilmin. When Jl'avor
Morlock nnd l'astor elect Heilman attempted
to close the Sunday school.prcparatory to other
services, Superintendent Krueger and I'.istor
elect Velter demanded their authoiity. Im
mediately the congregation rose from tlieii seats
and one partyscized Verier, while Heilman
jumped down from the pnlpit. Vetter was
finally landed outside, and notwithstanding his
license from the conference, was refused ad
mittance by Heilman, who stood in the door
way. When Vetter's adherents had reljred
Rey Morlock preached his sermon, deploring
the occurrence, but saying Chiist was the only
bishop they were recognizing at nresent. Ex

Washington, April 20. Senator Dolph
has prepared an amendment to the navy ap
propriation bill which strikes out the provision
for the line of battle ships and provides for
three floating batteries. The Oregon senator
says the big ships proposed;are mongrels.neilh.

thoroughly drenched on Thursday night. In

Springfield, O., April 10. At a colored
baptizing, given in Buck creek this afternoon,
a part of a bridge, loaded down with specta
tors, collapsed. Four persens were injured
fatally, and over fifty more received severe

Limestone street bridge, which had been con
demned and afterwards repaired and which
spans a race, in addition to crossing a creek,
