Some Ox Lieu. Recently we Dub-
lished an item from a Eugene paper
about the criminal neglect by a man of
his wife, and several who read it said
the fellow ought to be banned, and that
is the way the item read. The following
from the same paper shows there was a
good dial nf smoke in the matter, and
we publish it in order to equalize the af
fair and show how reports ran be exag
gerated :
'The grand jury lust week indicted
Ldward Wand, of Cottage Urove, for
manslaughter, and he was brought down
from there last Thursday morning. He
is the man reported as ha'viim caused the
death of his w ife by neglecting lier while
she was sick. The case was tried Satur
day before the circuit court, J. W. Ham
ilton ami G. (). lbilman appearing fur
the state, and U. Ii. and (i. A. Durris fur
the defendant. A number of witnesses
were brought dow n (rum Cottage Grove,
aiming the numlier ljeing several who are
said to have circulated the lirst report.
At the trial the tcstimi.r.y s'.i.iwed thai
the woman had nccived care at the
hands of her husband and his folks dur
ing all the time alter the birth of her
child, iind until her death. Perhaps the
attention paid her is not what it should
have been, but owing to their circum
stances it was the liest they could afford.
The prosecution really hail no grounds
tor conviction, and after the case went to
the jury they were but ten minutes
bringing in a verdict acquitting the de
fendant. Sullicinit to say that it was the
weakest criminal case ever tried in Lane
county. Ir Oglesbv testified that Mrs
Niwiljirass, I'M Wand's sister, was a faith
ful and efficient nurse during the entire
illness of .Mrs Waud."
Si.ekiv Lt oexe. A Mr llaswell, who
at present is stopping at Albany, came
up last Friday to talk with our citizens
in regard to establishing a w oolen mill,
lie was met by several of our prominent
citizens, who'" escorted him around town
and showed him our water power, etc.
But his proposition didn't suit them.
His proposition was that if could pro
cure a suitable site, and our citizens
would give him .'5,000, he would invest
a similar amount and would erect a
building large enough to conduct a four
set mill, but he would run only a two set
mill until the business was sufficient to
warrant a larger one. Our citizens didn't
see nt to take him up and lie left the lirst

Frank Such, aged 35. of San Francisco
went into the barroom of the Massasoit
hotel at (i o'clock this evening.and sitting
down in a dining stall.shot himself in the
right tenmle. He died instiintlv. Tl,
bullet passed through his head a"nd also
through an inch partition. Drink was
tne cause ot the deed. He was en route
to Alaska.
The above, dated at Taeoma, March
12th, appears in the Oregonian. Frank
Such.as nearly as we can learn, is proba
bly a son of Mr F L Such.owner of f Mover.

and Mr Such had been at Taeoma, where

met him that he is the suicide mentioned.

from Eastern Oregon to the effect that
the loss of stock was not large at all. It

who was over from Burns this week
says that the loss of stock in Harnev
county is not near as large as has been

understand that the Ladies' Aid So:lety
are Intending to build a hospital as well as
a home. They Intend to make themselves
thoroughly conversant with the plans and
working of the best hospital in the state,

sist in this, as they have done in other en
terprises, we will have a hospital equal to
any in the state, one that Albany can be
justly proud of.
