Here U the grainiest opportunity" of the age to make some money. The names ol Victoria C Wood- hull ami Tennessee Clallin are familiar to everybody hi the United Stales and many were the mean stories lolii ubout lliem. Tliey are now ri'hidents of Knglund, and after these many years their husbands want to know who struck Hilly. Paltervon, as It were. Iteileving the Democrat Is authority on nil great qucitions they liave sent 11s the following : "Mr John lild duln Martin and Sir Francis Cook will pay the sum of one thousand pounds steiling to anyone who shall reveal the names of the person or persons conecrned in the con spiracy to defame their wives, Victoria C WootMiull, now Mrs jcumi is martin, anu Miss Tcnnie Clallin, now Lady Cook, and who shall give such evidence as shall se cure a conviction." Junction. The typical country cdilor is quite a character. He is both a foo and a smart man. He is a fool for being an editor, and being a smart one to keep out of the poor house. Now Is the proper time to agitate the Junction and Florence railroad. But it takis something besides agitation. It icquircs acllon. Are you willing to act? No doubt a number of our subscribers were disappointed In not receiving the Pilot last week, Ihe reason Is because our supplies could not reach us, as trains were not running, and we did not have. or could not get paper on which to print a full issue. l'ilot. A Bio Concern-. One of the items in the report of the grand jury of Maiion county against the Insane asylum was the following, which is very suggestive of the fact that it would be better for some news papers and people not to harp at little faults of big institutions: "The Institution is an Immense affair, wnere nearly seven hundred persons are fed and cared for.and it would be a strange thing indeed, if some complaints were not made, and the wonder is that more have not been cast loose on the public." . A Bridge At Brownsville. Judge Blackburn has returned from a trip to Brownsville to Investigate the matter of the bridge lost there by the recent floods. The result will probably be the construc tion of an entirely new bridge, though part of Ithe old one stands, a dilapida ted looking structure now. A substan tial solid bridge should be put In that will be too much for the future Hoods. The estimated cost is $S,ooo to $10,000. This is the only bridge of any size that went out. the fewothers being small ones. One Kind op Villain. A drummer came Into tne Umatilla House Monday, says the Dalles Times, and inquiring Into the result ot the accident near the Cascade locks Sunday asked whether any passen gcrs were killed. He was answered In the negative. This satisfied hiir. and he said. "1 am glad. It there are no passengers Killed It Is all right." The cold, heartless villain did n it seem to understand that the life of a laborer was just as precious as that of a merchant or business man. Return Them. The party who enter tered my house on or about Fed. 1, 1890 and took therefrom a suit of clothes, some jewely and other articles is known and this will eivc notice that unless the stolen articles are returned 1 will prosecute the Prty. If property returned no questions iii dc asKeu. A wora to tne wise is sum ctent. R E Conn. r0T Injured. The Democrat mentioned the fact of the Three Sisters being on a county road at Oregon City ihe enterprise says: "Captain Short Informs us that the Three Sisters Is not Inlured In the least The boat was beached carefully, and as "on as the basin Is repaired she will be launched and pl.-ced upon the river In as goou condition as before ihe storm. Reaches Oct. Besides the scattered damage done by the flood little side 1: sues are suggested In different parts of the valley. Heie is one: "County Commissioner Hvl.inJ went u lobugene on Friday last. He says th "mice lor a new Court house this year has been completely knocked out by" the in San Francls:o the gambling spirit i: rampant. Every daily In the cltv but one receives 3 loco a month for advcrtlsli from the Louisiana lottery, and It Is cal culatedtlut this gigantlc'swindllng con cern sella $100,000 north of tickets in the city very month. The other day an Arkansas woman gave birth to four girl babies, whereupon an old mab sent her $400, taking good care, th iujh, to Impress upon the moth ers mind tiat the money was sent tlirugh ympaihy.and not as an endorsement of uch procetdings. Mr Jefkerson. This well known ! mountain lies In the eastern limits of Linn county, about five miles south of east of the gem city of the valley, Albany. In view ot the fact that the people InEugene, i-oruaiiu,and other places claim in a scr ious manner, to have seen smoke nrUIng from Its peak, the mountain Is of pecu liar Interest just now. dome people be lieve these stories, whereas as a matter of fact, they are simply canards. The re port is not a good one 10 no forth, nor a just one, for as a matter of fact Mijcffer. son has no inclination towards e. en the eruption ol smoke. What has been seen is simply fog and smoky looking clouds, and it takes the e; e of a Pollonius to con. struct the sight" into anything of a con hustihle nature. Yesleruav noon County Clerk Montague and Recorder Davis look a look in the direction of 'he nioun lain, from the top of the Court house, but the hank of clouds and fog prevented even a vision of the mountain. A Democrat man, wishing to be snhied, secured the rising you lg attomev, Mr Russell Wyalt, as a guide, and did the act in a morderate- l.y clear skv, but the same kind of bank of clouds hoveled around the mountain. The following from the Salem Stales man, we believe is in the line of other statements in reference to Mt Jefferson. The parties aie simply mistaken as to the belchings, which we predict will be found to he clouds and mist : If it should he clear to day don't fail to get where you can get a good view of hoary headed old Jefferson which is said to be belching forth tlamcs. Those distant rumblings you have heard lately were from Jefferson and a man on a "sighiiy hill several miles to the souineast 01 aalein says lie has caught several glimpses of smokeissuing from Alt jmcreoii wtuilu the past lew days. Can any newspaper man in this state offer us any consolation in regard to Olyinpia S Murry, an East Portland M. D., meeting her obligations? We under stand she is death on female complaints, but unfortunately our troubles are of different cha-tcter. We have applied to her for relief time and lime again, but our exchequer still yawns for relief. If she has squared her 'advertising account with any of our newspaper brethren, please give us the mode ot settlement. We can. The Democrat Immediately after you and many other papers took her ad, warned you that she was no good, and the West Side published her standing. It serves you and others just right, Mr, limes. Never squeal when you get taken in in so transparent a case as Mrs Olympla S Murrys was In the start. Got Ready For The Boat. Mr Wills, f the Blackdog warehouse, has been in he city, aud reported the loss by the floods in his warehouse as being about 3000 bush- Is. The warehouse is all right. Ar rangements had been made with the Bent- ley on Its last trip to take considerable of tr.e wneat, ana it had agreed to but was loaded when it reached there, hence a greater loss. Coming. Col Hogg, and Messrs Coe, Blair and several othtr big O P men, are expected from the East in a few days, whcn there will be a stir In railroad matters that w;ill open the eyes of even Crook county people An O P man savs the road w'fl go this year in quite a lively manner. The ani.ual meeting of the Building and Loan Association will be held to-night at the W C T U Hall. The annual report to be made will show for eleven months, and will be very flattering lor tne nrst year. $10,100 nas been loan ed at an average of nearly 55 months In terest in advance. c.very stockholder should be present. Roseuurg Wants- The Presbytery of Southern Oregon at its last meeting deci ded to locate a college some where within its bounds. The location naturally falls between Roseburg and one of the towns in Josephine county. It will be decided large ly by tne inducements oiiereu. Koseburg therefore making a strong eitort to se (jure it. A Skeleton. Last night a man took to Salem a skeleton said to have been found when on a cruise from the Willapa on Shoalwater bay to Astoria, and of which he said nothing till he came to that city. A ring worn on the third finger bore -the engraving: "lo c. V. from K R " The remains are undoubtedly those ot Miss Eva Burbank, a beautiful, popular and accomplished young lady who was drowned in tne sun several years ago. A NivvsPAPER Wail. It was sold in tracts, and st veral of our neighbors availed them selves of Ihe opportunity to secure homes, (i R Ward bought the farm land cast of the road and Clarence Taylor and Monroe Leach that west of the l oad. T 1 Vaughn and A Kimmonds bought timber land, and the Misses Sloan of Eugene bought the land on the islands, getting it for 40 cents an acre. Not more than one brood mare in thirty would rear a colt Mr Culver formerly resided in thlj city The Markets The wheat market just now presents a very gloomy aspect, wlthoutany sllverlining insight. socents Is the present quotation In Aldany, though the San Francisco market would only iust ify 55 cents, and the outside demands are tew.
