In yesterdays issue of that paper a dispatch irom Columbus Ohio was published tell ing of Bricc and Thomas, both csndidates for United Slates Senator, and both demo crats, establishing their headquarters in that city, to be read for the legislature that convenes there to-day. The Uregoni an makes its own headings for its dispatch csand it lieaduJ the dispatch above re. ferrcd to as follows: "Two Barrels Open ed. Bricc and Thomas Establish Sa loons i.i Columbus.'' The evident pur pose of that paper was to belittle the char acter of these two gentleman In public es timation for there was not a word said a bout saloons in i.he dispatch. Another dispatch tells of Gorman's opposition to the Australian system of voting. That paper heads this dispatch: "Honest Boss Gorman. Fair Election Means Demo cratic Defeat, He Says." Now Gorman aid nothing of the kind and even the as soclated press reporter had not the gall to say it. The Orrgaulan with I'.s accus tomed unfairness was the author of both falsehoods. 1 he lynching by w hite men of eight negroes confined in jail at Barnwell South Carolina charged with murder, was no less criminal than the crime committed by the negroes. The authorities of that s!ate should spare no fains nor expense in ferreting out these lynch ers and punching them. These negroes, though murderers, had the same tight to a f.iir trial by a jury of their pc?rs as white men have. In his letter of acceptance, Harrison said: "Only the interests of the public seivice should suggest removals from of fice " And yet, thousand-, of removals of fed eral officials have been made by Harrison because those removed are dtmocrats, and jjr no other reason, and their places have been f:'.led by republicans, because they are republicans, and for na other reason. But the president's friends say that Cleveland removed as many republi cans as he has democrats. If this state ment were true, it is in no sense any ex cuse for the president to violate, with im punity, one of the plainest and most straight-forward pledges that he ever made. Harrison made his pledge with a full knowledge of all Cleveland had done His pledge was, that, notwithstanding all the removals Cleveland may have made, he, himseif, would follow the rule that only the interest of the public service should suggest remo.als from office." In view of this pie ige, when Harrion's mer ciless guillotine falls upon the head of some devoted demociat, and he is removed, the public will conclude at once that he was removed for cause other than a po litical one, for the president stands open ly pledged to make removals only when the public service suggests it. This is an outrage upon every democrat removed, for he is thus compelled to go out under a cloud, though he may have been the most faithful and pains taking official. This complaint does not go to the cases where democrats are out for political rea sons when that is assigned as the reasons. If republicans want the offices for political reasons let them say so openly and can didly and few will be theoLjections to their taking them. Does any one suppose that the efficient, able, and cultured Judge Mc Arthur should give up the office of United States District Attorney to be succeeded by a man almost unknown to the public, or that John Myers should give up the mar snails office, or that 11 Abrahams should be turned out of the office of collector of customs, or that Ex governor Whitaker should be dismissed from the office of col lector of internal revenue because the public service demanded their removal? It is well known, and admitted on all sides, that these have all been faithful, compe tent and clean officials, and that the public service rather demanded that they should be retained in their respective offices, b ut the imperious demand of the spoils hun ter broke in upon the president's ear and he had neither strength nor courage to disable it. These democrats will lose their places because they are democrats and their succes-ors will bt appointed because they are '-publicans. Let this truth be admitUu 'U mociats wid rest content.
